🐛🐛NEW BABIES!!🐛🐛

The Pearl Crescent and Pipevine Swallowtail eggs from the other day all hatched!! In addition to the Eastern Black Swallowtail and Monarch caterpillars I already had, we've got SOOOO MANY BABIES now!! This is why late summer is the BEST time to have a Flutterby event! 🐛🦋🎉

🐛🥚🥚Caterpillar Eggs!🥚🥚🐛

This is why it's important to have HOST PLANTS!! When I brought Pipevine Swallowtails and Pearl Crescent butterflies to my walk-in aviary at the Jefferson County Fair, I included New England Aster for the Pearl Crescents and a bit of Pipevine plant for the Pipevine Swallowtails ... JUST IN CASE any females needed to lay eggs.

And I was RICHLY REWARDED! 🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚

I've never reared Pearl Crescents before. So, I'm rather excited! There are soooooo many eggs!! Woohoooo!

🦋🎡Jeff. Co. Fair!🎡🦋

I had a great time bringing the BIG BIG world of LITTLE BITTY butterflies to the this weekend. This was my Day 2 on Sunday, July 26. Just look at the JOY and WONDER on these faces! It makes my heart so happy! 🥰💕🦋🦋🐛 Thank you, Jefferson County!

🦋Male Spicebush Swallowtail🦋

Flutter Friends! Look what I caught today! It's a male Spicebush Swallowtail! The coloring gives its gender away. Note the pale, whitish green-blue. Females are more brilliant blue.

Why did I catch-and-release this one? He has a *job* to do, and that's to find a *wife* & procreate the species. If this were a female, I'd have brought her home & let her stay overnight with some Spicebush or Sassafrass, hope for some eggs, & release her tomorrow.

Why? It's what I do. I raise butterflies and bring all the amazing world of butterflies to you! Education & entertainment.

🦋🐛🥚Monarch Eggs!🥚🐛🦋

It's mid-July, and the first of the Super-Brood are being laid! These Monarch eggs will be butterflies in mid-August. Some of those will go into "diapause" (reproductive organs won't mature) in order to conserve energy for the flight to Mexico, while others will reproduce once more, and THEIR babies will be right in the bulk of the Super-Brood.

Think of it like a bell curve. We're at the beginning of the curve, with July eggs giving us August butterflies. The August eggs will be the ones flying in September at the height of the curve. And the eggs laid in September are at the end of the curve; their babies will be heading to Mexico in October and even November! Those final eggs take longer to grow because the caterpillars move less as the nights get cold.
