🔎🦋SKIPPERS!🦋🔍

These little guys are super cute! They're not brightly colored, generally earthy toned. And because they're small & fuzzy, you might have ignored them as "moths."

But scientists have classified them -- for now, anyway -- as the sixth family of butterflies, the Hesperiidae. Who knows about tomorrow, they get Plutoed from time to time. Lol.

Anyway, some of my fave things about skippers:

• They interact easily without flying away.
• Their heads look too big for their bodies.
• They're super fuzzy.
• They have hooked antennae.
• And when they land, they sometimes look like airplanes!! Adorable!

🚗🦋🦋👋SAY HI!

Idk why my esses sound like shushes! It recorded weird! Anyway ...

I finally added my Cricut-created vinyl stickers to my van! I love how they color-shift! If you see me driving by, please say, "Hi!" I'd love to meet you!

🥚🐛Sulphur Caterpillar!🐛🥚

Flutter Friends! I'm rearing a new-to-me species! I'm pretty excited! It's the Cloudless Sulphur.

If you look outside in our east-central Missouri area and see large, pale yellow butterflies, that's probably this one. The Cloudless Sulphur is the largest Pieridae in Missouri. Pieridae is the Family of yellows & whites.

The Cloudless also MIGRATES, similar to Monarchs! Go on down the rabbit hole. They're pretty amazing!

🐛🪰MY POOR BABIES!🦟🐛

I have TWO SPECIES of caterpillars that were INFESTED with the larvae of other insects!

Monarch --> Tachinid Fly
Hornworm --> Braconid Wasp

They're called "parasitoids" and not "parasites" because they do kill the host organism, every time. There is no saving a caterpillar once it's been infected. This is just how it is.

Sad day for me, but very normal in the natural world.

🐛Imperial Pupa!🐛

We have an Imperial Moth pupa!!

My homeschool co-op shared a YUGE caterpillar with me, and this is the update for it!

It pupated! I call these "chrysalises," even though they're not the typical "ornate" chrysalis. Functionally, it's the same! Pupa, chrysalis...
