R and T #9 Chapter 13 of They Say, I Say is about how write scientific papers and articles. Many of you may find comfort in having solid, proven facts to back up your claims. Graff and Birkenstein (2010) explain that “like all academic writers, scientists make and defend claims” by using the “they say/I say” structure (156). Because scientific writing is very similar to other forms of academic writing, Graff and Birkenstein give some tips on how to write the most effective argumentative scientific paper. What are the tips that you found most effective? Why? What do you think is not helpful? Why? How?

R and T #8 Wallace observes that, "Of course the main requirement of speeches like this is that I'm supposed to talk about your liberal arts education's meaning, to try to explain why the degree you are about to receive has actual human value instead of just a material payoff. So let's talk about the single most pervasive cliché in the commencement speech genre, which is that a liberal arts education is not so much about filling you up with knowledge as it is about "teaching you how to think"." In relation to Wallace's observations, consider your experience at this liberal arts community. Do you feel that you are getting more than a material payoff? What is the human value of this education that you are experiencing? Is it a cliche to think that you can be taught how to think?
