One practice is that inconsistent attendance and late submission of work results in loss of points earned, so grades are lower than would have been if the grade was given based only on the product or demonstration of understanding or learning. The loss of points based on executive function skills such as organizing and being on time, results in lower grades and the underachievement reinforces implicit bias that non-white students are not ready for advanced coursework.
Access to gifted ed. or accelerated classes often is based on achievement rather than ability and potential to achieve.
BIPOC Students Continue to Be Left Out of American Gifted Programs
While 15% of students are Black, only 8.5% of gifted and talented students are Black; 27% of American students are Latino, but make up only 18% of gifted and talented students.
