Gina gave this presentation at an ancient rock carving site where she shared her interpretation of a Maya glyph that she believes no one has decoded before.
The painting below was made to visually represent that meaning. It was created by artist Maria O’Donofrio specifically for their presentation.
⸻
* The conference held at Jeffers Petroglyphs in Minnesota
(a site with thousands of ancient rock carvings, some very old—up to ~10,000 years).
* The stone there is similar to the red stone from Pipestone, which Native Americans have used for carving for a very long time.
* Scientists are still trying to understand the earliest people in Minnesota and the meaning of those carvings.
* Gina believes this location was the perfect place to present their own interpretation of an ancient Maya glyph panel.
* The artwork in the photo was created by an artist (Maria O’Donofrio) specifically for Gina’s presentation.
* The colors in the painting are not original—the real ancient carvings didn’t have visible color. The painting is just a modern, interpretive version to help visualize the meaning.

✨MEET OUR 2026 MCKNIGHT CULTURE BEARER FELLOW - GINA KANBALAM MIRANDA✨
Gina Kanbalam Miranda is a distinguished Mayan Time-Keeper and spiritual guide based in Minnesota, renowned for her deep connection to ancient Meso-American wisdom and the sacred Mayan Calendar. Hailing from Meso-America, she is celebrated as a carrier of ancestral knowledge, often referred to as the keeper of the days or Ajkin.
At just 11 years old, Gina was approached by an elder named Ochee from the Chorti Maya, beginning her journey as an apprentice. Under Ochee’s guidance, she immersed herself in rediscovering lost Mayan teachings—foundations that would shape her decades-long mission to master the Mayan timekeeper.
Beyond her shamanism spiritual work, Gina is also an author, educator, and artist. She authored impactful books such as A Matter of Chulel, Journey of the First Americans, the Mayan Constellations, Finding the Chulel, the Mayan Lunar Calendar, and the Ch’aalaj Cycle. I don't know why this hasn't received more publicity, but this fifty-foot sculpture was unveiled recently in South Dakota.
It's called 'Dignity' and was done by artist Dale Lamphere to honor the women of the Sioux Nation.
