The Thien Long Mon Kung Fu system is a mixed system that is comprised of the Chinese Northern Shaolin, Pak Mei, and Vietnamese Binh Dinh styles. Northern Shaolin focuses on long distance strikes and kicks. Pak Mei focuses on rapid mid-range hand strikes and on internal energy use. Binh Dinh focuses on close quarter fighting and grappling. The system uses a combination of strikes, kicks, locks, throws, take downs, pressure points, and energy work. The style is designed primarily for self defense, as opposed to a sport or tournament style. In Thien Long, the focus is on technique instead of speed or strength. This ensures that every move works and can be effectively used by anyone, regardless of age, size, or ability. Aside from the physical training, students also learn about academic aspects of martial arts such as: anatomy, kinesiology, body dynamics, physics, and traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese weapons training is integral in the curriculum and includes the following weapons: staff, saber, straight sword, kali stick, cane, hook swords, steel fan, kwan dao, pu dao, monk spade, spear, and whip chain. Along with traditional weapons, knife fighting, throwing, and knife and gun defense are integrated into the curriculum. Students of Thien Long Mon also have the rare opportunity to train in the ancient art of Chinese lion dance. Participation in Lion Dance is encouraged, but completely voluntary.
