🌍 Another year, another chance for Grade 7 science students to explore the world around them.

They recently took a walk to the pond on the campus of St. Catherine University to collect a water sample and observe plant and animal life. They will be testing this water (along with many other student-gathered samples!) as part of the Water Quality Unit. 💦

By the end of the unit, they will use the information from these water quality tests to analyze data and draw conclusions about the health of Minnesota's lakes and rivers. Dr. Eddie even joined one class!

SPA's Advanced Art students kicked off the first day of school last week in the best way possible: together. 💙💛

"Mr. Lowman and I wanted the first thing we did together in the Advanced Art Workshop to be something that didn’t have a right answer. Students made forms out of clay, chose their paint and colors, and then decided how they wanted to make three marks on the canvas. They could press gently, use force, repeat a mark, layer colors, or completely change course as they worked. Every one of those choices says something about the person making it.

That’s really at the heart of what we do in an Advanced Art class. You develop an artistic voice through making things, experimenting, taking risks, and paying attention to the choices that start to feel like your own. Bringing everyone’s marks together on one canvas gave us a way to celebrate those individual voices while also making something none of us could have made alone. Is SPA magic written in the stars? More like written in moons! 🌙

Upper School Science Teacher Joe Martin wrote: "I traveled to Logroño, Spain to attend the Global Hands-on Universe conference for astronomy educators. I was able to meet other motivated educators in the field and hear presentations on some of the latest tools that enable authentic astronomical measurements and analysis in the classroom. Coincidentally (wink wink), the conference was located in the path of a total solar eclipse, and clear skies allowed me to get a great view. I made this series of pinhole projections during the eclipse and snapped a photo." — Joe Martin, Upper School Science
