A big thank-you to the St. Paul Rotary Club for welcoming Patrick Plonski, Executive Director of Books For Africa, and for highlighting the power of books to transform lives across the African continent.

For 38 years, Books For Africa has worked to put books and educational resources into the hands of readers throughout Africa. With shipments of approximately 22,000 books in a 40-foot container, every partnership helps bring knowledge, opportunity, and hope to communities.

Last week, the Rotary Club of Saint Paul welcomed Patrick Plonski, Executive Director of Books For Africa, the world’s largest shipper of donated text and library books to the African continent.

Patrick shared how Books For Africa ships about 22,000 books at a time in 40-foot containers, helping put books and educational resources into the hands of readers across Africa.

📚 September Featured Project: Onesimos Nesib Library in Hurumu, Ethiopia

A quick reminder about this month’s Books For Africa Featured Project!

The Onesimos Nesib Library in Hurumu, Oromia, is an important learning resource for students, educators, and community members. Books For Africa is working to provide a container of educational books to help expand access to knowledge and strengthen learning opportunities in the community.

Our goal is to raise funds to ship books covering:

📖 STEM, science & technology
🌱 Agriculture & health sciences
🎓 Education, economics & social sciences
📚 English-language literacy and learning materials

Every donation helps put valuable knowledge into the hands of students, teachers, and lifelong learners.

Good meetings today at the African Union Embassy in Washington, DC. Books For Africa presented to the African Diplomatic Corps (about 40 countries represented today), visited with various individual ambassadors, connected with Books For Africa donors and partners (including Libraries for Kids), and signed a special MOU with Pax Agricultura witnessed by African Union Ambassador H.E. Gaspar to ship many containers of books to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Angola, and other countries. We also handed out 50 Merck / MSD e readers loaded with medical books to all diplomatic representatives.

📚✨ Small Girl, Big Dreams: Meet Sophia!✨📚

At just 12 years old, Sophia from Seattle, Washington, decided she wanted to make a difference — one book at a time. ❤️

Earlier this year, Sophia launched her own community book drive, “Before the Bookmark,” with a goal of collecting books for children across Africa. With the incredible support of her community, she collected more than 400 books, packed them into 7 boxes, and raised funds to help get them to Books For Africa.

But Sophia didn’t stop there. When she learned that it costs just 50 cents to put a book into the hands of a child in Africa, she set aside part of the money she raised to help with the next step of the journey. 🌍📖

From children’s books to books for older readers, Sophia collected something for everyone — because she knows firsthand the magic that books can bring.

“When I started this effort, I was not sure how this would turn out, and I thought, it’s just me, can I really make a difference? But one step at a time I kept going.” — Sophia

She even sold handmade crafts at her local farmers market to help raise money for the project, and her Seattle community rallied behind her big dream.

Sophia hopes her story will inspire other kids to believe that they can make a difference, too. And we couldn't agree more. 💙

Thank you, Sophia, for reminding us that you’re never too young to change the world — and that sometimes, a small idea can become something much bigger than you ever imagined. 🌍❤️📚

📚🌍 WE’RE MAKING HEADLINES IN ATLANTA!

We’re excited to share that Global Atlanta is spotlighting Books For Africa’s upcoming Atlanta fundraiser, featuring His Excellency Binalf Andualem Ashenef, Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United States.

The Books For Africa Annual Fundraising Luncheon will take place Friday, September 25, at The Buckhead Club in Atlanta.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 to help Books For Africa continue its mission of ending Africa’s book famine and expanding access to books and educational resources across the continent. Global Atlanta reports that Books For Africa has shipped 65 million books to all 55 African countries since 1988, including 2.5 million books last year alone.

There’s still time to join us for this special event and help us close the fundraising gap!

We’re excited to launch a new initiative at Books For Africa! Each month, our Project Feature Committee will select one project to spotlight and help shine a light on the incredible work happening through books and literacy across Africa.

Our First Featured Project: Onesimos Nesib Library in Hurumu, Ethiopia

The Onesimos Nesib Library in Hurumu, Oromia, Ethiopia is an important learning space serving students, teachers, and community members. Built through a local initiative in cooperation with Mattu University, the library carries forward the legacy of Onesimos Nesib—a pioneering scholar, educator, and translator whose work helped advance literacy and education in the Oromo community.

Books For Africa is raising $20,000 to help ship a container of educational books to the library.

The shipment will provide resources in:
📖 STEM — science, engineering & technology
🌱 Life Sciences — agriculture & health sciences
🎓 Humanities — education, economics & social sciences
📚 Literacy — English-language learning materials for university and community use

Your donation doesn't just ship books—it ships knowledge, expands access to education, and helps strengthen a community of lifelong learners.

A Decade of Giving Back 📚❤️

For nearly 10 years, Perry Mitchell has been a dedicated part of the Books For Africa family—volunteering twice a week, generously supporting our mission as a donor and event sponsor, and championing access to education for women and girls across Africa.

This Wednesday, August 19, Perry once again be put his commitment into action at our warehouse as he helped load the Zimbabwe–Phumulani 2026 container, proudly sponsored by Perry Mitchell himself. 📚

Perry will also be sharing his passion for education as a featured speaker at our 2026 Annual Atlanta Luncheon coming up in September, inspiring supporters with his commitment to creating opportunities for women and girls through education.
