📢 Speaker Announcement: 2026 Deconstruction & Reuse Conference

We're excited to announce our speakers for November's conference, including Lindsey Scannapieco, Managing Partner at Scout.

Old Schools, New Uses examines historic school buildings as civic landmarks and memory vessels whose adaptive reuse demands as much emotional and social care as technical problem-solving. Beyond large floorplates, outdated systems, and deferred maintenance, these projects must navigate the deep sense of ownership held by alumni, neighbors, and former staff.

Scout's approach favors incremental development and interim activation over imposing a fixed vision, asking what a building already wants to be. This philosophy is illustrated through Bok Vocational High School, now a thriving creative hub drawing 250,000 annual visitors, and the emerging Village of Industry & Art at the former UArts campus, showing how old schools can become new platforms for belonging, culture, and civic life.

📢 Speaker Announcement: 2026 Deconstruction & Reuse Conference

We're excited to announce our speakers for November's conference, including Jimmy Mitchell, Sustainability Manager at SKANSKA and Board Chair at Lifecycle Building Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 2026, a reclaimed product category prioritization exercise conducted by Build Reuse and Brad Guy identified masonry as a top 3 category for tracking embodied carbon / energy impact and exploring commercial-scale reuse feasibility.

In partnership with Build Reuse, Lifecycle Building Center is collecting LCA data for several reclaimed product categories, including brick, in order to support the generation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for reclaimed construction materials.

This session will review how LBC developed and launched its brick reuse program, share brick reuse project examples, offer recommendations for integrating workforce development, and provide resources to support replicability in other markets.

📢 Speaker Announcement: 2026 Deconstruction & Reuse Conference

We're excited to announce our speakers for November's conference, including Kathleen Hetrick, U.S. Sustainable Integration Lead at Buro Happold.

Scaling the reuse economy requires more than inspiring projects — it demands the policy architecture and regional infrastructure to make reuse the default, not the exception. This panel brings together practitioners and researchers from New York, California, and Arizona to share what's actually working, what isn't, and what each state can learn from the others.

Rather than a survey of parallel efforts, this session presents the outputs of a structured cross-state working group. Panelists will have spent the months before the conference working through a common set of questions: Where is momentum real and why? What are the persistent gaps that policy alone can't close? What does community-scale reuse actually require at the county and regional level?

The panel will close with a direct exchange: what can Arizona take from New York's legislative model and California's institutional infrastructure — and what does Arizona's community-coalition approach offer in return?

📢 Speaker Announcement: 2026 Deconstruction & Reuse Conference

We're excited to announce our speakers for November's conference, including Theo Zizka, Manager of Online Sales at Community Forklift.

Community Forklift, a 30-person nonprofit reuse organization in the DC area, takes donated building materials, furniture, and appliances and resells or redistributes them to families in need. Over the past two years, they've broadened their donor base - showrooms, deconstruction contractors, auction houses, estate sale companies, government agencies, and other nonprofits - while expanding consignment sales, purchased inventory, and volunteer-powered sorting.

This session will share their flowchart for rapidly routing this growing variety of donations toward resale, partner organizations, or raw materials recovery, and explain how acting more like a reuse hub keeps materials moving instead of piling up.

We're excited to announce our speakers for November's conference, including David Bergman, Founder and Director of the Center for Circularity in Interior Design.

Circularity in interior design has been discussed for years, yet adoption remains stalled by gaps in the loop: sourcing salvaged and remanufactured materials is difficult, and timing compounds the problem, since long gaps between design and delivery mean materials often fall in and out of availability. Post-use recovery also remains underdeveloped.

This session will feature a diverse panel of practitioners to discuss concrete steps to connect these gaps. The goal: practical strategies for simpler, more widespread circularity adoption in interior design.

This session presents GrooveLam, an innovative structural system developed at Cornell University’s Circular Construction Lab that reimagines reclaimed dimensional lumber as a high-performance, code-compliant engineered building product.

The session will outline the technical development of GrooveLam, including structural testing, fabrication workflows, and tolerance management strategies when working with heterogeneous reclaimed stock. It will further introduce ongoing research integrating AI-assisted lumber grading and digital design workflows to standardize variable material inputs, enabling scalable production and broader market adoption. Findings from recent prototypes and a NYSERDA-supported demonstration project will be presented. The session will also address regulatory and market barriers to reclaimed timber reuse, offering insights into certification pathways, supply chain development, and policy alignment.
