As therapists, we've all had that moment.

A couple looks at us and asks,
"What do you think we should do?"

Stay together?
Separate?
Keep trying?

It's a natural question, but it's not our decision to make.

Our role is to create a process where both partners can better understand what has happened to the relationship, reflect on their own contributions, and move toward a decision they can make with clarity and confidence.

That's exactly why Discernment Counseling was developed.

Therapists: How do you respond when a couple asks you to decide the future of their marriage? We'd love to hear your approach.

This can be a difficult truth to embrace as a couples therapist.

Our job is not to convince people to stay married.
Our job is not to convince people to divorce.
Our job is to help clients make thoughtful, informed decisions about their lives and relationships.

For couples on the brink, that often means helping each spouse better understand:
• What has happened to the marriage
• Their own contributions to the problems
• What they want moving forward

That's one reason Discernment Counseling feels so different.

The goal isn't saving the marriage.

The goal is helping couples gain clarity and confidence about their direction.
Ironically, when therapists let go of trying to "save" the marriage, couples often become more open to honest reflection and meaningful conversations.

Therapists: Was this a difficult lesson for you to learn in your career?

Many therapists tell us they spent years trying to figure out how to help couples when one spouse was leaning out of the marriage.

They had the clinical skills.
They had the desire to help.

What they didn't have was a clear roadmap for working with mixed-agenda couples.

Discernment Counseling was developed specifically for these challenging situations.

Because it is model-neutral, therapists from a wide range of backgrounds can integrate the protocol into their existing practice without abandoning the approaches they already use.

Through the training, you'll learn how to:
✔ Work confidently with couples on the brink of divorce
✔ Navigate sessions without taking sides
✔ Help each spouse gain deeper insight into their role in the relationship
✔ Guide couples toward clarity and confidence about their next step

Many therapists describe Discernment Counseling as the missing piece they didn't know they needed.

One of the most powerful moments in Discernment Counseling happens when couples begin to see their relationship pattern clearly.

Not who's right.
Not who's wrong.

The pattern.

Often, couples have spent years focusing on each other's flaws without fully understanding the cycle they create together.

When therapists help identify these recurring interactional patterns, couples frequently experience a new level of understanding about what has happened to their marriage.

That understanding doesn't automatically solve the problem.

But it often creates the clarity needed to decide what comes next.

Not every struggling couple is ready for couples therapy.

Some couples arrive with a very different challenge:
One spouse wants to work on the marriage.

The other is considering divorce but isn't fully sure.

For years, therapists had few structured options for these mixed-agenda couples.
Discernment Counseling became the first research-based protocol designed specifically for this situation.

Instead of pushing reconciliation or divorce, the process helps couples gain clarity and confidence about their next step.

Today, therapists around the world use Discernment Counseling to help couples navigate one of the most difficult decisions of their lives.

One of the most uncomfortable moments in couples work:

A spouse looks at you and asks,
"So what do you think we should do?"

Stay?
Leave?
Keep trying?

Many therapists feel pressure to have the answer.

But couples on the brink don't need someone to make the decision for them.

They need a process that helps them gain clarity and confidence in their own decision.

That's one reason Discernment Counseling was developed.

Therapists: What's your go-to response when a couple asks you to decide the future of their marriage?

06/24/2026

One of the biggest misconceptions about Discernment Counseling training is that therapists have to replace their current approach.

You do not.
Discernment Counseling is designed as a short-term protocol for couples where one partner is leaning out of the marriage and unsure about couples therapy itself.

The training gives therapists:
• A structure for mixed-agenda couples
• A clear framework for the early decision-making phase
• A way to avoid premature or ineffective couples therapy

If the couple chooses to pursue couples therapy afterward, you return to your own preferred model and approach.

Discernment Counseling is not about replacing your work.

It is about knowing what to do before traditional couples therapy begins.

One of the core ideas behind Discernment Counseling is that understanding yourself matters, regardless of the outcome of the marriage.

When couples only focus on the other person’s failures, they often miss the patterns they themselves carry into relationships.

Discernment Counseling helps each spouse reflect on:
• Their own contributions to the relationship dynamic
• The patterns that developed over time
• What they may carry into future relationships if nothing changes

Because clarity is not only about deciding whether to stay or leave.

It is also about understanding what you are bringing with you moving forward.

Many people assume avoiding marriage protects couples from the pain of divorce.

But long-term research on cohabitating couples tells a more complicated story.

By year five, about 80% of cohabitating couples have either broken up or decided to marry.

Commitment decisions matter because uncertainty eventually asks to be resolved.
That is one reason Discernment Counseling is so important for couples on the brink.

Rather than staying stuck in limbo, Discernment Counseling helps couples slow down, understand what has happened in the relationship, and move toward a more intentional decision about their future.

Clarity matters.
Especially when the stakes are high.

Sometimes couples say:
“We tried marriage counseling and it didn’t work.”

But what if the real issue is that the couple was never truly ready for couples therapy in the first place?

When one partner is leaning out and the other is desperate to save the marriage, therapy can quickly become polarized, pressured, and stuck.

Discernment Counseling was designed for this exact moment.

Not to fix the marriage.
Not to push divorce.
But to help couples gain clarity before deciding what comes next.

Sometimes slowing the process down is what finally moves it forward.
