Promo time!
"Back Pocket Promo" Cheat Sheet
This is sort of a generic promo (that doesn't mean "boring") but something you could kind of pull out at the last minute if a promoter ever said "can you cut a quick promo for this match please?"
Any town, any opponent.
Think of this the way an actor prepares a monologue for auditions. For those who don't know, sometimes casting directors will ask an actor to perform a prepared monologue which is a short scene that really showcases your strengths as an actor. It shows commitment to a character, range, preparation, etc. People will sometimes even have a few different monologues encompassing different tones/genres (comedic, serious, intense) and occasionally a casting director will hear it and then offer corrections or suggestions to see how well you take direction and think on your feet.
You never know when they'll ask you for it. Be prepared.
1. Who Are You? Why Should We Care?
- Brag, Whine, Lie… or Inspire (Heel/Face)
-Boil yourself down to one thing
-“I’m the guy who doesn’t quit” (face) or “The only star this dump deserves” (heel).
-No life stories here.
- Make It Personal (Without being too specific):
“You’ve got bills? So do I. Tonight? I get to forget about all that stuff, while stamping yer guts out, and YOU get to forget it to because.....well because I'll be stamping yer guts out!" 😃
2. Why This Match Matters
(Put asses in seats!)
-Threaten or Promise (As a face, never make a promise that you won't be able to uphold. If you know that the outcome will NOT be you getting your hand raised, DON'T promise the fans that you'll be the one getting your hand raised. 😄 As a heel, lie your face off and feel free to over-promise and under-deliver.
- What are the stakes? What is "the business" of this match or promo? Has the promoter given you an objective? Can you make one up to give the match a bit more steam?! (without going into business for yourself) and do not ever "book your own angles and storylines" without approval from the boss!!
3. Command the Room
- Make Eye Contact
-Pick one person in the crowd. Talk "to" them, not "at" them.
-Last Line End on a "hook" they’ll chant.
-We love sing alongs in wrestling!!
- Stumble? Own it. Yell louder. Laugh. Cry. Just don't show us that you stumbled because we don't know until YOU tell us!
Unless you're asked to specifically record in portrait mode (TikTok/Reels) shoot in landscape. You can crop that image into portrait mode in a few seconds with an editing tool if you need to/ want to.
Make sure the lighting is as good as possible. They say to use natural light when you can. Make sure the backdrop looks good. You can use a brick wall, blank wall, corner, etc. You can shoot anywhere, just make it look like you meant for it to look that way, and not at your mom's kitchen table with her stacks of Reader's Digest and knitting tools in frame (unless you mean to have that stuff in there. 🤣)
Now go make.
Happy to answer questions too!!
