"Truth in Art: Showing the Unsayable," a talk by Dr. Tim Ketcher Department of Philosophy.

What is the relation of art to truth? Can a work of art reveal truths about the human condition that cannot be said directly but must be shown? By transfiguring the commonplace, works of art unveil dimensions of human existence grounded in intersubjective "facts" that are not simply a matter of opinion or cultural construction. By "decoding" the way in which the commonplace is transfigured in the movie, "True Grit," we will attempt to demonstrate how it illuminates important intersubjective features of our own internal geography with respect to "facts" about justice and mercy.

Roccasecca Project Now Accepting Submissions for 2025 Awards Honoring University of St. Thomas Faculty, Staff, and Students Who Embody the Values of St. Thomas Aquinas

Student & Faculty Awards — Roccasecca Project Roccasecca seeks to foster and celebrate Catholic identity at UST, one that invites all involved to embrace the goodness, truth and beauty of the Catholic faith, as professed by the University’s patron saint, St. Thomas Aquinas.

Today is the feast of St Nicholas. On this day in 1273 our university patron St. Thomas Aquinas had a vision after celebrating Mass that caused him to describe all he had written as straw when compared with what he had seen. In this image by Fr. Robert Staes OP, Aquinas is seen not as pushing away his books, but rather as dancing for joy with straw in his hands because of what had been revealed to him.
