Ramadan begins tonight. Regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, it is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. Hamline University is proud to support its Muslim community in observing the month, and asks everyone to support those who are fasting as part of their observation.

Hamline University is proud to observe during February 2025. This year's theme, "African Americans and Labor," focuses on the profound intersection between the labor industry and collective Black experience, and commemorates the contributions of the Black worker throughout American history.

January 29 to February 3 marks the start of the Lunar New Year, with this being the Year of the Snake on the Chinese lunar calendar. The Snake represents wisdom and transformation, and offers chances for change and personal growth. All noble goals – Happy Lunar New Year to all!

Hamline University announces Dr. Mayme Hostetter as its 22nd President, starting July 1, 2025. A Twin Cities native, Dr. Hostetter will be instrumental in creating the Hamline of the future while expanding our influence as a trailblazer in education. Congratulations, Dr. Hostetter!

Today marks the first day of Kwanzaa, the annual six-day observation of Black culture culminating with a Karamu feast on January 1. The first day’s theme is umoja, the Swahili word for unity. We wish all observants a happy and meaningful time of reflection and celebration.

Today marks the first day of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. Hanukkah celebrates the light of freedom to live and worship as one chooses. It is observed by the traditional menorah candle lighting each day of the observation. We wish all observing the festival a happy and meaningful celebration.

Today marks the Winter Solstice – the official start of winter, and also the shortest day (and longest night) on the calendar. There are observations all over the world to mark the celestial event, after which the days get longer on the long road to spring. Enjoy the day!
