On Thursday we hosted Connemara Night ✨ We learned about Brídget Mannion Aylward, who migrated and carried her story across generations, with a beautiful presentation by Leslie Thomas and Birdie Uí Chonámha. We also got to hear some love music from Danny Diamond. Such a fun evening! 💚

President Connolly and Provost Doyle at the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Poetry Award conferred in its 30th
year by the University of St Thomas Center for Irish Studies and overseen by Director Dr. David Gardiner

“Would it be an exaggeration to say that poetry saves lives?

📖 Yesterday evening, President Catherine Connolly returned to Trinity for a celebration to mark the 30th Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry.

President Connolly presented the prestigious award to this year’s recipient, Enda Wyley. The O’Shaughnessy Award was established in 1997 by the Centre for Irish Studies in the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota to recognise outstanding contributions to Irish poetry.

Previous awardees include Trinity’s own Eavan Boland (the inaugural recipient), and the late Gerald Dawe (2024).

In her address, the President said, “Poetry is all the more important at a time when the language of the powerful has become so misused and debased to feed the narrative of ‘might is right’.” Her words reminded me of something Ada Limón, former US Poet Laureate, once said:

“Would it be an exaggeration to say that poetry saves lives? Maybe, maybe not. During my tenure as the Poet Laureate, I’ve come to realise that not only are people hungry for poetry, language, and connection, but that for so many people around the world, it serves as a much-needed lifeline already.”

So many lifelines are needed in the world today and there is something quite beautiful about poetry playing this role.

Congratulations to Enda on this wonderful recognition, and special thanks to David Gardiner, PhD, Director of the Centre for Irish Studies at University of St Thomas. It was lovely, too, to be joined by members of the O’Shaughnessy family, along with so many members and friends of Ireland’
