From the beginning, Dr. Tyner created Planting People Growing Justice with a “multifaceted approach” in mind. There would be a bookstore aspect to promote literacy and offer diverse titles and a community space, but also a publishing arm to help ensure that more of those titles make it into the world.

“The bookstore and press work together to advance our mission of promoting literacy and diversity in books,” Dr. Tyner said. “We were compelled to action because you are more likely to see a black dog or black bear on the cover of a children’s book than a Black girl or Black boy. We publish books that celebrate Black history and culture.”
