East African Magnet School is proud to celebrate Aliyo Jama for being selected as part of the inaugural St. Thomas Undergraduate Teacher Residency (SUTR) cohort! 🎉

This incredible opportunity will support Aliyo on her journey from paraprofessional to licensed teacher while continuing to serve and inspire students in SPPS.

In summer 2026, eight Saint Paul Public Schools SPPS paraprofessionals joined the inaugural St. Thomas Undergraduate Teacher Residency (SUTR) cohort, an expansion of the School of Education teacher residency model. SUTR Undergrad creates a new pathway for aspiring educators who don’t yet have a bachelor’s degree.

On Sept. 17, the cohort came together on the Minneapolis campus for their first day of fall classes! Over two years and two summers, residents will continue working in SPPS schools while completing their bachelor’s degrees and earning a Minnesota special education teaching licensure.

These future educators are already deeply rooted in the school communities they serve. Through job-embedded learning, financial assistance and robust wraparound support, SUTR Undergrad is helping reduce barriers to becoming a licensed teacher while preparing educators to continue serving and strengthening their communities.

We’re excited to follow this inaugural cohort on their journey from paraprofessionals to licensed teachers!

🌍✨ Culture Night at East African Magnet School ✨🌍
Our Culture Night was truly an incredible celebration of community, diversity, and learning! I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the amazing staff who planned, coordinated, and supervised such a fabulous event.
It was wonderful to see the vibrant colors, beautiful fashion, and so many smiling faces throughout the evening. The sense of community was felt throughout the building.
We were especially grateful to see so many families come out, share their cultures, and learn from one another. Events like this remind us how rich and diverse our school community is and how much we grow when we come together.

We are truly grateful for everyone who works tirelessly to keep our students safe during arrival, recess, and dismissal—and for all who support learning every day.

The staff played hard today but alas, the students were victorious in the second annual staff v. student last week of school soccer game. It is now 1-1. Students, see you on the field in 2026!
