Only two days away--RSVP today! Are you or a friend interested in majoring or minoring in English? Or maybe you’re just interested in learning more about what the program offers? Attend our information session! Professor Heather Bouwman, chair of our department, will discuss the following:

It. The Stand. The Shining. Carrie. Pet Sematary, Misery. The Green Mile. The Dark Tower series. And so many more. These titles, and the movies that compliment them, are all well-known works by Stephen King, who celebrates his birthday today. If you like horror or the strange or are visiting Maine (his home state) , he's your man! His nonfiction book On Writing, has been used in some of our classes in the past. Happy birthday!

Employers don't care about the liberal arts skills of critical thinking, writing, emotional intelligence, or cognitive flexibility.

REALITY
A World Economic Forum survey of top executives from nine leading industries listed these and other humanistic skills as the top skills they are looking for in employees. And a Forbes magazine article writes that "today's tech wave will inspire a new style of work in which tech takes care of routine tasks so that people can concentrate on what mortals do best: generating creative ideas and actions in a data-rich world."

It's the birthday of William Golding (1911-1993), the author of the 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, which tells the story of a group of boys who are stranded on an island and attempt to govern themselves, with horrific results. A classic novel for American Government classes. Golding is also known for the first novel in his sea trilogy, Rites of Passage, which won the Booker Prize--the full trilogy was collected in one volume, To the Ends of the Earth. In 1983, he won of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Today is the birthday of Dame Agatha Christie, the queen of mystery writers! Whether you prefer Hercule Poirot in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and DEATH IN THE AIR or Miss Marple in THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE or 4:50 FROM PADDINGTON, or even Tommy and Tuppence in THE SECRET ADVERSARY, there is no shortage of great detectives in her novels and many short stories. Join our community of thinkers and writers in the Literature and Writing major! 📚💡 Develop your writing and critical thinking skills while exploring key social and cultural issues. Cultivate valuable skills like creativity, collaboration, and emotional intelligence. Our 40-credit program (past the core English course) covers a range of topics, including Environmental Literature, Sports and Social Justice, Victorian Gothic literature; Native American literature; literature from a Christian perspective; and author-focused classes on James Baldwin, Mary Shelley, and J.
