✨ Motherhood Is An Initiation ✨

Some of these songs were born from my own story. Others came from listening to the stories of mothers around me... the things whispered between women, carried quietly for years, or spoken only after someone finally asked the right question.

My own initiation into motherhood was different in an important way. I had already spent years healing before I became a mother, and beneath everything birth asked of me, becoming her mother felt strangely like coming home. Like meeting a part of myself I had been walking toward for a very long time.

I know that isn't every mother's story.

And that is part of why this album exists.

Motherhood holds an incredible polarity. It can be the deepest love we have ever known and still bring us face to face with grief. It can awaken something ancient in us while revealing how profoundly unsupported modern mothers have become. It can feel sacred and brutal. Expansive and claustrophobic. Like finding yourself and losing yourself in the same breath.

These songs live inside those contradictions.
They speak to the mothers who found themselves in motherhood, and the mothers who disappeared inside it. The ones held by a village, and the ones who discovered the village was never coming. The women trying to mother differently than they were mothered. The ones carrying generations behind them while holding a new generation in their arms.

But underneath the ache, these songs keep reaching for what is still there.

The woman beneath the roles.
The knowing beneath the noise.
The ancient memory beneath everything we were told motherhood was supposed to be.

Because sometimes the initiation is not into becoming someone new.

Sometimes it is the long, sacred remembering of who was there all along.

I wrote this song for my daughter. 💖

She experiences something called sensory over-responsivity (SOR), which means her nervous system can experience ordinary sensory input with an intensity most people don't understand.

A sound isn't always just a sound. It can feel enormous. Frightening.

Light can be painfully bright.

A room with too many sounds, movements, smells and sensations can become so overwhelming that there isn't any space left to experience the joy of tasting a strawberry or feeling the sun on her skin.

I understand some of this in my own body, too.

My sensory sensitivities came much later in life and aren't nearly as intense as hers, but I know what it's like when the world becomes too loud, too bright, too much. When your nervous system is working so hard to process everything coming in that the beautiful things can disappear beneath the overwhelm.

And I've thought so much about what that means for her.

To come into this beautiful, strange world with her senses turned all the way up.

The very senses that allow us to experience so much of the magic of being alive can also make being here incredibly difficult for her.

That is where this song came from.

I want to help her slowly discover what else those beautiful, sensitive senses of hers can feel.

The smell of wildflowers.
The softness of our kittens.
Strawberries warm beneath the sun.
Rain singing against the roof.
Bubbles floating through sunlight.
The first birdsong of morning.
A sky filled with stars.

There is so much waiting for her here.

And she doesn't have to discover all of it today.

We can go slowly.

One sound that feels beautiful.
One taste that brings joy.
One touch that feels safe.
One tiny piece of this Earth that makes her want to reach out and experience another.

One beautiful thing at a time.

I hope that as her world becomes safer, there will be more and more room for the beauty to come through.

And maybe one day those senses that have made this world feel so overwhelming will also allow her to experience its beauty in ways most of us have long forgotten how to feel.

How unbelievably beautiful it is to be alive. ❤️

Recently, I was asked who taught me how to be a mother.

Who had I looked to?
Who had shown me the way?
Who had been my example?

And the answer that came was...
No one.

The longer I sat with it, the more I realized how much of my life had been a process of stripping away.

Questioning what I had been told.
Removing masks.
Unlearning roles.

Seeing where I had shaped myself to belong.
I'd done that work in pieces throughout my life.
But I still had masks.

And then I became a mother.

Motherhood didn't gently ask me to take them off.

It put me through the fire until I could no longer wear them.

Then there was this little human in front of me, and motherhood kept asking:

Who are you going to be here?
And here?
And here?

When the advice didn't feel right.
When someone else's certainty collided with something I knew inside myself.
When doing what was expected would have been easier than standing alone.
Again and again, I had to choose.

And I discovered:
I KNEW ✨

Not everything. Not every answer.
But I knew her.

I knew when something wasn't right.
I knew when she needed something different.
I knew when the answer everyone else was giving me wasn't ours.

Every time I trusted that knowing, another layer fell away.

Maybe some versions of motherhood I'd witnessed weren't there to show me how to mother.

Maybe some were there to show me what motherhood wasn't.

Perhaps that's why, when I searched for the woman who taught me how to become this mother, I couldn't find her.

There wasn't someone I was supposed to become.

There was just layer after layer of everything that wasn't mine...

until motherhood burned through the last places I was still willing to abandon myself in order to belong.

So what happens when you strip away the masks?

The expectations.
The inherited definitions.
Everyone else's version of a good mother.
Everyone else's version of who you're supposed to be.

What is left?
MYSELF ❤️‍🔥

And maybe that's the greatest thing motherhood has asked of me.

Not to become someone else's idea of a mother.
But to finally become completely, unapologetically me.

I stopped into Midwest Witchery & Healing this week to replenish our electroculture display because they had almost completely sold out 🥹😍

There is something really meaningful about creating something with your own hands, putting it out into the world, and discovering that other people are drawn to it too.

Especially something like electroculture.

It asks us to look at plants as more than something we put into dirt, water, and place near a window. Plants are living energetic beings, existing within the same electrical and energetic world that we do. Electroculture is a way of working with that world rather than pretending it isn't there.

Our houseplant antennas are made by hand using sacred geometry, natural wood, copper, quartz, and stones from the Earth. The copper antenna gathers energy from the aether and surrounding atmosphere, directing it down into the root zone where it becomes another source of energy for the plant, helping support stronger growth, greater vitality, and overall resilience. The quartz acts as a natural amplifier, strengthening the energetic exchange through its piezoelectric properties.

They are beautiful, but they aren't made simply to decorate a plant. There is intention behind every part of them.

Right now, our Aetheric Roots creations are carried in two Minnesota stores, and I’d love to see them find their way into a few more.

Some songs I write because something wants to be said.

Others I write because I desperately want to bottle up a tiny piece of my daughter's childhood and keep it forever. ❤️

Little Tree Whisperer is one of those.

My daughter has an absolutely abundant love for trees. Everywhere we go, she has to greet them. Even pulling into the grocery store, before I get her out of the car, I hear from the backseat:

“Go say hi to the trees!!!” 😂🌳

And we do.

She says hello. Pets them. Hugs them. Kisses them. Talks to them. She LOVES them.

And I know the trees love her right back.

Long before she was here, some friends had already nicknamed me the “tree whisperer.” I've heard the trees whisper and experienced their almost comical, joyful delight when someone approaches who actually sees them.

But with her?

Ohhhh, they know her. ❤️ And they are absolutely delighted by this little human who runs up to love them without hesitation.

THAT is where this song came from.

I wrote it from the trees' perspective. The maple sees her coming and tells the willow. The willow tells the pine. The pine tells the cedar. Until the news is moving through the trees...

“She's coming! She's coming!”

Because of course they remember her. Of course the trees she loved yesterday tell the trees she'll meet tomorrow.

There is a part of the song that says:

“You remember we're still living
You remember that we see
And that's why all the forest
Knows you're family”

And THAT is my daughter.

She hasn't forgotten.

She moves through the natural world as though its aliveness and consciousness are simply obvious.

Maybe because to her, they still are.

So I turned this little piece of her into a song. ❤️ The curly pigtails. Kisses pressed into bark. That little voice demanding we go say hello. And the absolute PARTY I know is happening among the trees when they see their little friend coming. 😂🌳🌲

Someday she won't be 2½ anymore.

But this will still be here.

A tiny piece of her childhood held inside a song.

A reminder that before she was old enough to wonder whether trees could hear her...

she already knew they could.

Those who have known me much of my life know that I have always been a writer, with a long lost love for singing.

And over the past year, both that I once loved found their way back to me.

Music. 🤍

And somewhere in that return, the medicine within words found a way to move. Through sound, they could reach places words alone sometimes cannot.

So quietly, another part of AETHERIC ROOTS has been taking form.

I’ve written many songs now. Songs for mothers, fathers, and babies. Songs about healing, breaking cycles, remembering, and finding our way back to one another. And joyful songs for Littles, born from raising my own little human. 🤍

Every lyric is my own writing, as is the creative and production direction. I use AI to give them voice and music, allowing me to bring into sound what I can hear and feel within me.

Many are on YouTube now, and some have made their way onto major music platforms.

But today, I want to share:

❤️‍🔥 THE MOTHERS ARE DROWNING ❤️‍🔥

I wrote this for the mothers carrying more than one heart was ever meant to hold alone.

For the mother everyone calls strong while she is quietly longing to be held.

For the mother who says, “I need a village,” and is given encouragement when what she actually needed was hands.

And for something I believe our bones remember:

Mothers were never meant to mother alone.

There were circles. Fires. Sisters, aunties, elders, hands that stayed. People who understood that when a child entered this world, the mother was sacred too.

Maybe some of what hurts so deeply in motherhood is the soul remembering what we have collectively forgotten.

Maybe healing isn’t about teaching mothers how to carry more.

Maybe it’s about remembering how to carry one another.

I’m not creating this music for recognition. I simply want it to travel where it is needed.

So if something within a song speaks to something within you, please share it. Send it to the person who enters your heart while listening.

Perhaps that is another kind of medicine too:

“I heard this, and I thought of you.”

May these songs find the souls they were written for.
