A little look inside and outside our schoolhouse! Pictured here is our library, complete with a reading nook and rocking chair, and our large yard with benches created in woodworking class: perfect for running around during our 45-minute recess after lunch. Get ready… MOS is doing our annual fundraiser selling Minnesota Weatherguide Calendars! There are some gorgeous pictures for this year, including wise owls and dazzling sunsets. In the age of digitization, it can be nice to have a wall calendar to cross off the days or get an encompassing view of one month’s activities or deadlines.

We’re selling each calendar for $26, which means you save by not paying tax on the purchase, as you would when ordering directly from the website, and you save on shipping by picking up your order from our school house.

As promised earlier this month, here are some closeups of models made by students of Indigenous homes in different regions, as well as a closeup of the main poster! Hands-on learning—with models, experiments, and more—is always encouraged at MOS to wholly engage students, and is one of our strengths here at the school.

Metropolitan Open School always starts the day after Labor Day (no matter how late Labor Day falls). And an important tenet of our school is that students help decide the curriculum, for example by voting on a list of subjects upon which to concentrate in our science and social studies classes, which always include a variety of learning modes including worksheets, art projects, student presentations, lectures, and informal quizzes. Happy September! With the school year about to start, we’re reminiscing on some of the great work students produced last year, like this informative poster showcasing various Indigenous homes in different regions. We explored our academic passions in 2025, and got a lot of laughing, singing, and playing done too. Our holiday show was a big hit and we’re looking forward to the coming year!

As the year comes to a close, I wanted to share a school that I continue to support. I've had many students go through Metropolitan Open School (MOS) and I know what a wonderful program they have for gifted students.

MOS provides a non-traditional approach to education for kindergarten through junior high students that allows them to reach their highest achievement levels. Their program is one that has been very successful in meeting the needs of highly gifted children in the Twin Cities area for many years!

The first month of school is finished. Things are busy but since it is the knitting teacher doing the post, I'm sharing a knitting picture because this week one of last year's new knitters finished her scarf and this year's new knitter did his first 2 stitches by himself. Proud of them both.
