Metropolitan Open School (MOS)

As the year comes to a close, I wanted to share a school that I continue to support. I've had many students go through Metropolitan Open School (MOS) and I know what a wonderful program they have for gifted students.

MOS provides a non-traditional approach to education for kindergarten through junior high students that allows them to reach their highest achievement levels. Their program is one that has been very successful in meeting the needs of highly gifted children in the Twin Cities area for many years!

The first month of school is finished. Things are busy but since it is the knitting teacher doing the post, I'm sharing a knitting picture because this week one of last year's new knitters finished her scarf and this year's new knitter did his first 2 stitches by himself. Proud of them both.

On August 7 around 80 people got together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of MOS. Thank you to everyone supporting us over the years, and to all those who were able to make it in person from as far as Texas, California, Washington State and Germany!

The students made models of volcanoes and observed the formation of craters.

Last week's math lab was about volume. The students learned using hands-on measurements and their graphing skills.

Another yearly milestone has been achieved: publishing a research report! Every student followed their individual interest in choosing a topic and research questions.

Recent projects our learners worked on:
1. Dioramas: Students built an environment that is inviting to immigrants.
2. Students used cylinders and triangles to build stable and tall constructions with newspaper and tape.

MOS has a long history of allowing dogs to help with knitting class. Unfortunately, the knitting instructor no longer has an appropriate dog but one of our teachers has a dog with therapy dog personality and skills. So, meet Igor our present knitting dog.

The school is completing 50 years and former students, teachers, and friends of the school are warmly invited to celebrate with us on August 7, 2022. The doors open at 2 pm, come take a look at students' work and reconnect with other former students and teachers. The program starts at 3 pm.
