Safety is a priority at Hillyard Technical Center and Mr. Wheatman had a great lesson for his students in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) on the importance of electrical safety. Mr. Wheatman showed students of HTC the effects improper electrical handling and maintenance could have on the body. They used a pickle to represent the human body, attached electrodes to the pickle, and sent electrical current through the wires. The pickle began to glow and strobe as the current ran through the pickle looking for an escape. Then they sliced the pickle open to show the burnt cavity inside. What an amazing, hands-on learning activity for our students on electrical safety! HTC and SJSD Proud!

Every program at Hillyard Technical Center with hands-on, work-based learning shops or labs contains state of the art, industry based equipment to incorporate the real world experiences in our education. For this reason, our students must spend the first one to three weeks covering safety issues in the workplace. They do so not only through books and written tests, but also by hands-on modeling of safe practices under the watchful eyes of our industry trained instructors. All students must successfully pass the safety portion of their class before they are allowed to begin working in our shops/labs. Pictured here is Mr. Martinez's morning Automotive I class, all of whom passed their safety tests and are now ready to begin safely lifting vehicles and learning the mechanics of vehicles. Students in Health Services were learning about the importance of personal protective equipment in the health related industry. Gloves are one of the most frequently used pieces of PPE in health care as they create a barrier between hands and infectious or hazardous material and preventing direct contact. The HSA I students pictured here are practicing proper application and removal of gloves under the guidance and instruction of Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Jordan. HTC and SJSD Proud!!

HTC CERT TEAM DRILL #1 - 2026-2027

Our first CERT TEAM drill of the school year is in the books and our team responded with urgency, teamwork, and professionalism! HTC's CERT TEAM is made up of 14 trained staff members, including 3 team members with Medical/EMT backgrounds, who are prepared to drop what they are doing and respond when the call comes. Today's surprise scenario: an unresponsive person in a classroom with no breathing and no heartbeat. Following the CERT TEAM call over the intercom, members responded from throughout the building. While manual CPR was underway on the mannequin, two AEDs arrived on scene, with a shock delivered just over the 1 minute mark from the call - well within our 2 minute goal!!! A great first drill and a great reminder that preparedness, teamwork, and quick action matter.

Outstanding job, HTC CERT TEAM! And a special thank you to our school nurse, Stacy Kovak, for her leadership, training, and guidance.

Our HTC team is ready to make 2026-2027 a year of POSITIVES!! Our staff has spent time this week in professional development, preparing for an incredible year of learning, growth, and opportunity for our students. From new HTC signage around the building to bulletin boards reminding us to Be Awesome, Make Good Choices, Commit to Excellence, and Strive for the Portrait of a Graduate, the message is clear,.....We Are Ready!!!

Most importantly, these pictures showcase the caring, dedicated, and wonderful team behind HTC. Everyone is pitching in, preparing, and doing their part to make this a great year for our students.
