It wasn't all that long ago that women were not even allowed to play in a symphony orchestra, let alone conduct them. But the last 40 or so years have seen the rise of women conductors in all areas of classical music, and in the last ten they have made great strides in the importance and reputation of the orchestras they helm or guest conduct. Many of you will remember that the SJS was led my a female conductor, Deborah Freeman, for many years. so nothing "new" to us! So who was the womwn who started it all? Most agree it was the great French teacher, composer and conductor, NADIA BOULANGER whose impact on music through her students lives on.
