Rolling Into a New Milestone: Helping Your Baby Learn to Roll Over

One day your baby is happily playing on their back, and the next they surprise you by twisting, reaching, and almost making it all the way over. Rolling is an exciting milestone because it is one of the first ways babies learn to move their bodies independently and explore their world. While every baby develops at their own pace, there are simple ways you can encourage the muscles and skills needed for rolling.

Daily tummy time helps strengthen the neck, shoulders, arms, and core muscles that support movement and body control. Placing toys just out of reach encourages your baby to turn their head, shift their weight, and practice reaching across their body. You can also gently help your baby complete a roll by guiding their hips and allowing them to feel the movement rather than doing it completely for them.

Side-lying play is another great way to help babies discover their body position and practice bringing their hands together. Spending time on different surfaces, like a firm play mat or blanket on the floor, gives babies opportunities to push, wiggle, and experiment with movement. Avoid spending too much time in containers like swings, bouncers, or seats that limit free movement, because babies learn best when they have space to explore.

Celebrate the little attempts—the twists, wiggles, and almost-rolls—because each one is strengthening their brain-body connection. Rolling is not just a physical skill; it builds confidence, coordination, problem-solving, and the foundation for future milestones like crawling and sitting. Your encouragement, patience, and playful connection are the greatest tools helping your baby discover what their amazing body can do.

The stages where handwriting develops...

Every child is unique and different when it comes to handwriting. However, here are some stages that may be helpful when looking at a child's writing milestones:

In this article, you will discover skills to practice for each performance milestone, such as:

1️⃣ Offering crayons and paper frequently for consistent exposure to handwriting tools
2️⃣ Build their muscle strength in their hands and fingers by offering squeeze bottles to grip
3️⃣ Provide many opportunities for writing and coloring with different utensils like chalk, markers, dry erase boards and many other options.
4️⃣ Use tracing sheets with numbers and letters. Continue building hand strength by offering play dough to play with.

Correcting a child does not require embarrassing them. When possible, address difficult behavior privately, calmly, and respectfully. This allows you to set firm boundaries, teach better choices, and preserve your child’s dignity. Public and private correction build trust, model respect, and strengthen the parent-child relationship. ❤️

Parents, Please Put Your Phones Down
Before you check your phone again…
look at your child.

They’re not asking for much.
Just your eyes.
Your attention.
Your presence.

One day they will stop saying,
“Mom, watch this.”
“Dad, look at me.”

Not because they stopped needing you…
but because they learned you’re busy.

Your phone will always be there.
Their childhood won’t.

Put it down sometimes.
Those little moments are everything. 💛

The best memories with your kids don’t have to cost much. ❤️ An ice cream date, a neighborhood walk, pancakes for dinner, or a few minutes of uninterrupted one-on-one time can help children feel loved, valued, and connected. They may forget the activity, but they’ll remember how special they felt spending time with you. ✨
