“Why did I get decompression sickness (DCS) even though I stayed within my computer’s no-decompression limit (NDL)?”

This question is frequently posed to DAN’s medical team. A common misconception is that remaining within your dive computer’s NDL guarantees protection from DCS.

Dive computers use algorithms to estimate decompression stress based on factors like depth, time, and breathing gas. These mathematical models are limited by the variables they measure and the assumptions on which they are built. The models do not fully account for various biological and situational factors that influence decompression stress, such as physical exertion, thermal stress, and individual physiological susceptibility.

Adding to the complexity, there is no universal decompression algorithm. Different computers may produce noticeably different NDLs and guidance for the same dive profile.

Remember that DCS risk, while probabilistic, generally increases as divers approach their NDLs. To further reduce risk, many divers build additional safety margins into their dive plans by adjusting NDL parameters through conservative computer settings or gradient factors, staying well clear of their NDLs, lengthening safety stops, and prioritizing fitness to dive.

Dive computers are effective tools, but the safest dives result from combining technological guidance with knowledge, sound judgment, and conservative dive planning and practices.
