Throwback to a beautiful ceramic piece created by Yenicca Ramirez 🎨

This bowl had quite the journey before it finally made its way out of the kiln. For a while, it was tucked away with other pieces waiting to be fired, and when it was first glazed the design was completely hidden under a coat of transparent glaze that goes on pink so artists can see where they’ve applied it.

Once it came out of the kiln, the surprise was revealed! Yenicca used underglaze to paint a stunning koi fish and experimented with blowing bubbles through the glaze to create a unique, organic texture across the surface. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that really stands out.

I love seeing students take initiative, experiment with techniques, and push their creativity in new directions. Great work, Yenicca!

High school art students recently practiced using value to create the illusion of depth. After shading sections with alcohol markers, they used black ink to define their shapes, then added shadows with darker marker and highlights with white gel pens.

It’s amazing how a few simple adjustments with light and shadow can make shapes appear to pop right off the page!

Our High School Art students recently wrapped up a project focused on negative space drawing; a skill that’s much trickier than it sounds! Instead of drawing the object itself, students practiced carefully observing and drawing the spaces around objects to improve their accuracy and observational skills.

For their final project, students sketched potted house plants, paying close attention to the shapes formed by the leaves, stems, and the spaces between them. They then divided their paper with a diagonal line, separating positive space and negative space.

On one side, students filled the background with solid black, allowing the plant to emerge through the negative space. On the other side, they focused on value shading to create depth and form in the positive space.

The final results create a striking contrast while showing just how powerful careful observation can be in drawing. Great work, high school artists!

One of the best moments in the art room… opening a full kiln!

There’s something special about opening the kiln and seeing shelves full of finished student artwork. Glaze has a way of bringing a piece together, deepening colors, highlighting textures, and sometimes revealing surprises students didn’t expect. Some glazes even change dramatically in the kiln; a piece that looks bright red when painted on might come out of the firing as a rich blue!

Even better is seeing the excitement from the artists themselves as they discover how their work turned out. It’s always a moment filled with smiles, curiosity, and a lot of pride in what they created.

We’re excited to share more of these ceramic pieces in the coming weeks. Many works from 1st grade through high school will be featured during our Academic Showcase at the end of March, and we hope to highlight a few special pieces in the display case along the way. Stay tuned to see more of the incredible work our students are creating!

A Little Late for Dr. Seuss Day… But Too Fun Not to Share!

Our 7th grade artists recently finished these whimsical Dr. Seuss–inspired houses, and they turned out fantastic! Students sculpted their houses from clay, experimenting with playful curves, exaggerated shapes, and imaginative details inspired by the wonderfully quirky architecture found in Dr. Seuss illustrations.

After firing, students brought their creations to life with bright glazes and bold color choices that really capture the fun and creativity of Seuss-style design. Every house has its own personality, and it’s been so fun to see the different directions students took with the project.

Even though Dr. Seuss Day was March 2, we’re excited to finally share these imaginative creations with you today. Great work, 7th grade!

Something Seuss-tastic is coming…

Our 7th grade artists have been busy creating whimsical ceramic houses inspired by the playful, imaginative style of Dr. Seuss. Twisting roofs, wonky windows, and lots of creative details are starting to come together — and we can’t wait to show you the finished results!

High School Art – Printmaking Tiles
Students wrapped up our printmaking unit by blending traditional and modern processes—studying woodcut prints, designing symmetrical tiles digitally, transferring designs to linoleum, carving by hand, and printing final editions using brayers and barens.

The finished works feature repeated, rotated tiles assembled into bold compositions that highlight craftsmanship, problem-solving, and strong design choices. These pieces are a great showcase of patience, precision, and creative growth—well done, artists! 👏

4th Grade Art – Glazing Day! 🐟🔥
Our 4th graders recently glazed their pinch pot fish sculptures. Students formed pinch pots, turned them on their sides, and added details like fins, teeth, and lots of texture before glazing their pieces this week. I love the personality these show!

We’re trying out a newer glaze (Mayco Elements) that should break over texture and really highlight all those details. The colors you see now will look very different after firing, many reds will turn into blues or browns, which is part of the magic of ceramics.

We can’t wait to open the kiln and see the final results… stay tuned!
