We want to give a warm welcome to the newest member of our staff, Leine Moratelli! She will teach 3rd grade DLI Portuguese and do instructional coaching for Portuguese teachers in our district. We are so excited to have her join us! Below is a little about Mrs. Moratelli!
Hello, my name is Leine Moratelli and I am so excited to be joining the South Mesa Knights. This will be my 8th year teaching here in WCSD, and my 19th year as a teacher. I graduated in Languages (English/Portuguese), then got two post-graduations, one in ESL and Literature and another one in Special Education. In the USA, I have an endorsement in Dual Immersion education from Dixie State University and I’m constantly presenting and participating in Language Conferences to learn and share good practices.
This year, I am also excited to begin a new role in the district as the Portuguese DLI Learning Coach, where I will have the opportunity to support teachers and continue strengthening our Portuguese Dual Immersion programs. As always, I continue loving traveling and exploring, outdoor activities, sports and spending time with my family. I can’t wait to meet and spend time with my new students and make new friendships with the amazing staff at South Mesa. Go Knights!

Dear South Mesa Families,
I hope you have had a wonderful summer so far! It is the mid-point of summer break and we are excited to welcome students back to school in August. Here are a few updates and reminders about summer and the beginning of the school year.
First of all, I want to thank those families who took advantage of the summer library days! Today is the last day to checkout or turn in books. My heart feels happy knowing that our students are continuing to read and grow throughout the summer. Thank you to Mrs. Jenson, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Smith for coming in and opening the library for our students in June.
As a reminder, our front office is open during the summer on Tuesdays from 9:00-12:00. You are welcome to drop in then if you have any school business to attend to. Mrs. Mackelprang, Mrs. Snyder, and Mrs. Terry will also answer any voicemails, emails, or questions that come through during the week.
PTA is also excited for the coming school year! If you are interested in purchasing school shirts, please see the attached flyer. They are always looking for new members, too! One of the best and easiest ways to be involved at your child’s school is to be a member of PTA. You can volunteer on your own terms, choosing what you are interested in helping with, or you can just be a member and be involved in having an inside look into your child’s experience at South Mesa. I hope many of you will join! You can reach out to them about membership at [email protected]
Here are a few calendar reminders:
August 3 @! 12:00: Popsicles with the Principal! This event is for any students returning to South Mesa, as well as NEW students. I can’t wait to see everyone!
If your 5th grader is interested, I would love to have any future 5th grade students that would be willing to help pass out popsicles and give school tours to new students. Please email me and I will send details.
August 5: We will be doing our initial Kindergarten testing. A link to sign up for a time will come to the email you listed at registration.
August 11, 12:00-2:00: Open House for all students. Class lists will be posted at 11:00 inside the front doors. Teachers will send a welcome email for their students and families by 9:00am. If you do not receive an email, your email is not set up to receive things from school through Powerschool. Be sure to come to the school and Mrs. Mackelprang will help you update that information. You and your child may meet their teacher between 12:00-2:00. If you cannot attend at this time, please email your child’s teacher and arrange another time to drop in.
August 13: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
August 13 & 14: Kindergarten ONLY will have early dismissal at 11:30 on August 13 & 14. Full days will begin the following week.
August 27 & 28: Diagnostic testing days, early dismissal at 11:30.
September 7: Labor Day, NO SCHOOL!
I am happy to announce that this year, we will be implementing the Leader in Me curriculum. This is a curriculum designed for children based on The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey. I am so excited for this opportunity for our school! There will be more to come on this, including a parent information night. I know if we are a team in this vision, our students will continue to gain skills essential to navigating life in the 21st century!
We will also have a special focus on America 250 this year, including learning fun facts about our country, learning our National Anthem, and learning more about patriotism and civic engagement. Watch for more information to come on this!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Stay safe and keep enjoying these summer days!
..And happy 250th 4th of July, America!
All the best,
Principal Nobis
