πβ¨ St. Cloud State University is celebrating a major achievement in teacher preparation!
Our Elementary Education program has earned an A+ rating from National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) for excellence in preparing future teachers in the science of reading, one of the most important skills in early education.
This national recognition highlights SCSUβs commitment to ensuring future educators are trained in all five essential components of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
βEvery child deserves a teacher who has been well prepared to teach reading, and every teacher deserves the opportunity to enter the classroom ready to help students succeed,β said NCTQ President Heather Peske. βAcross the country, many teacher preparation programs still do not fully align with the science of reading, but St. Cloud State University is demonstrating what strong preparation can look like."
SCSU is proud to be part of a growing movement transforming how teachers are prepared to help every child become a confident reader.

ππ The 7th annual Future Teacher Academy Camp is underway this week! ππ
This Minnesota Department of Education grant-funded event is a partnership between SCSU and St. Cloud Area School District 742 and Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools.
This year, 45 high school juniors and seniors are taking education courses taught by Dr. Debbie Wheeler and Dr. Bradley Kaffar while participating in field experience at local summer schools. Throughout the week, students have attended a St. Cloud Rox Baseball game, solved escape room puzzles, volunteered in the SCSU Community Garden, experienced campus life in Lawrence Hall, the Atwood Underground, and Garvey, and participated in interactive activities at the Great River Children's Museum.
We are proud to welcome this amazing group of students to campus and to be the place where where future teachers take their first steps - learning, leading, and having fun along the way πΎ!

π¨ Today, we are highlighting Spring 2026 Art Education graduate, Erika Rivera! π
As a part of her teacher residency at Apollo High School this year, she coordinated a visiting artist workshop for students and their friends and family members. She enlisted the help of fellow artists Olivia Jackson, Ash Ward, Andrea Burris, and Madi Scheierl. The workshop took place May 14th at Apollo. Attendees were able to meet the artists, learn about post-secondary creative pathway options, learn new creative techniques and processes, and take home the projects they created.
As a resident, Erika engaged in a yearlong student-teaching experience with Apollo Art teacher/mentor Andrea Burris. The teacher residency program is an active partnership between SCSU and St. Cloud Area School District 742 designed to provide SCSU teaching candidates with a school-embedded learning experience with immersion in district culture, instructional priorities, and school community.
Well done, Erika! We are so proud of you!
