Here's how we celebrate birthdays at A Home for the Day:
π We ask everyone: "What do you appreciate about this person?"
π We write it all down in our individual gratitude journals
π We sing, light a candle, and share cupcakes or ice cream
π We read every kind word out loud β to them, in front of everyone
π They take home a printed copy to keep
For members living with dementia especially, this moment is powerful. They may not remember every detail of the day β but they feel the love in the room. And that feeling stays.
It's one of our favorite traditions.

Organizing a field trip for a group of seniors with varying needs isn't simple. There are a hundred things to coordinate and the stakes are high. We take that seriously every single time.
So when a caregiver takes the time to share something like this β it fills our cup. Thank you for trusting us with your person. It means everything.

Earlier this week we took an amazing field trip to Stillwater River Cruises on a Trobec's Bus Service, Inc. bus. Our driver Hannah was great! The rain held off until our ride home. Families were invited and we had over 40 people attend! It was a great experience and we are so grateful to be able to make this happen for our members and thier families.

Monday was a beautiful day to get our hands dirty! π» Our members headed outside for a special gardening workshop led by three Master Gardeners from the University of Minnesota Extension office. They learned about planting, got some fresh air and sunshine, and each took home a flower they potted themselves. There's something truly special about being outside together β it lifts the spirit. Thank you to the U of M Extension for partnering with us to make it happen!

When families notice memory changes in a loved one, they often focus on one question:
"How can we improve their memory?"
But there may be an even more important question:
"Are they connected to other people?"
While memory challenges can be difficult, isolation often has an even greater impact on a person's quality of life. Friendship, laughter, meaningful activities, and having something to look forward to can make a tremendous difference.
In our newest blog article, we explore why socialization matters so much for older adults and how connection can help people thrive, regardless of memory challenges.
