Professor from West Point to speak on genocide Feb. 11 at SCSU Dr. David Frey will appear at an event sponsored by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education

01/20/2026

Join us for this important presentation at SCSU.

Dr. David Frey is a professor of history and founder of the Resnick Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies at the US Military Academy at West Point. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, testified in the Senate, and advised government agencies on mass atrocities, human rights, and more.

Drawing from his research and books on the leadership and ethics of N**i soldiers and Rwanda peacekeepers, Dr. Frey will discuss why it is important (particularly for those who are entrusted to use deadly force) to study the Holocaust and other genocides. Specifically, he will explore decisions made by German officers serving in occupied Soviet lands in 1941 as well as choices made by Major General Roméo Dallaire, who was Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Rwanda, during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

Last week, we welcomed Carl Wilkens to St. Cloud and St. Cloud State University. He spoke to approximately 400 students and community members over two days. A special thank you goes out to Sauk Rapids-Rice High School and Foley High School for making time during their day for Carl to speak to their students.

Carl Wilkens is the author of "I'm Not Leaving" and was the only American to stay in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. In his presentations, he not only described the horrors and history of the genocide, but also discussed the lessons learned from Rwanda's focus on reconciliation and healing as part of justice.
