Throwback Thursday!

40 years ago on September 16, 1986, the Chronicle reported alum Scott Ergen was named the new men's cross-country head coach. After dropping the program in 2015, St. Cloud State revived it this fall with Gabrielle Brown as head coach.

Happy birthday, St. Cloud State!

157 years ago yesterday on September 15, 1869, the Third State Normal School held its first classes. Those students included 40 women and 10 men as well as 80 children attending the campus lab school - and all in the Stearns House.

The images are of the two page course catalog. It is the earliest publication we have related to St. Cloud State. The catalog is in poor shape so enjoy the digital version.

Here is to another 157 more years!

Happy 50th year, University Archives!

Marie Elsen was the first University Archivist, the first of six individuals to hold that title. Arriving on campus in 1967, Marie Elsen retired in 1988, serving as University Archivist from 1977 to 1988.

We recently learned that Marie passed away this past May at the age of 98 - and did not have the pleasure to meet her. Rest well - University Archives continues to be in good hands.

Throwback Thursday!

50 years ago this month in September 1976, St. Cloud State students studied for the first time at Alnwick Castle in northern England during the 1976/77 academic year. St. Cloud State returned in 1981. 50 years after that first class, St. Cloud State students are studying in Alnwick for the final time.

60 years ago tonight on September 8, 1966, Star Trek premiered on NBC with an episode entitled "The Man Trap". St. Cloud State has a few connections to Star Trek.

On May 20, 1974, Leonard Nimoy (aka Mr. Spock) spoke at Halenbeck Hall with a presentation entitled "Star Trek Adventures". Besides the few images that appeared in the print Chronicle, University Archives has a single color slide of Nimoy's visit. At a hotel in east St. Cloud, Nimoy is standing next to Atwood staff member Brenton Steele.

The other is Communication Studies faculty member R. Bruce Hyde. Only appearing in two season one Star Trek episodes, his role as Lt. Kevin Riley was memorable. Bruce arrived on campus in 1990 and passed away in 2015 at the age of 75. The image shows Bruce teaching a class in 1999.

The first Throwback Thursday of the new academic year!

21 years ago on September 2, 2005, the Mathematics and Science Center (which opened in 1973) was renamed the Robert H. Wick Science Building. It honored Robert Wick, St. Cloud State president from 1965 to 1971. He arrived on campus in 1948 as a faculty member in speech.

A Mughal brass ewer that dates to the 19th century to northern India, the piece exhibits all of the classic stylistic elements associated with this period, including the floral sprays, drop cartouches and leopard head handle terminus.

One in a group of five and dating to the mid-20th century, a Chinese seal indicative of the late Qing style and fascination of dogs and dragons.

Bill Radovich, retired Vice President for Administrative Affairs from 1972 to 1992, passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 92. A Hibbing, Minnesota native, Bill was instrumental in bringing legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks to campus for the 1986/87 hockey season and elevating the program to Division 1 the next season.

Bill was a straight shooter and periodically contacted University Archives for information regarding the men's hockey program. We hadn't seen Bill for awhile, but it was a pleasure to chat with. Take care, my friend!

Another hightlight from the William Lindgren Asian Art Collection.

This Tibetan copper lidded pot, which dates to the late 19th century / early 20th century, has silver alloy fittings, handle, and spout, and is profusely decorated with Buddhist symbols and mythical creatures.
