We remember Speaker Emerita Melissa Anne Hortman and her husband Mark on the one-year anniversaries of their murders.

We grieve as a state, city, and country the truly senseless murder of Speaker Emerita and Caucus Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.

As the Hortmans are laid to rest, some thank yous and commendations are in order for how they handled the past two weeks.

1. First and foremost, to Melissa Hortman for her years of dedicated service to our common home, doing all that she could to make it a better place. We will follow in your footsteps and continue the work, Madam Speaker. Thank you and godspeed.

2. To the State of Minnesota, thank you for your grace and candor and hard work during these difficult two weeks. Thank you for your work in keeping each other safe and being there for one another in love and in loss, in good and bad. It is the Minnesota that all of the news cameras in the world cannot truly capture right—a state built upon servant's hearts. It is a state that exemplifies the core theme in the Prayer of St. Francis that Speaker Emerita Hortman took to heart; being an instrument of peace, especially when our worlds are shaken and peace feels like an illusion.

Mark and Melissa lie peacefully at the center of our state and our hearts today. Their memorial, guarded by service dogs and men and women in uniform, casts a momentary shadow over L'Étoile du Nord as we honor their life’s work to make Minnesota shine brighter for all.

BREAKING: Vance Boelter has been arrested alive, sources are confirming with FOX 9.

Boelter is the suspect who assassinated Minnesota Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and injured Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. Rep. Hortman and her husband Mark were fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning. Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were shot and injured in their Champlin home.

We mourn also for their children, Colin and Sophie, their loved ones and Minnesota as a whole, who have lost a mother, sister, friend and treasured member of the community. This senseless act has no place in our society.
