Some of the best learning happens when the classroom opens its doors to the community.
A huge thank you to Dr. Mic Bruner for bringing Introduction to Community Leadership to life this semester, creating space for students to move beyond theory and into real conversations with the people shaping our communities.
This course would not have been what it was without our incredible guest speakers:
Dr. Gregory Tomso, President of St. Cloud State University; Dr. Ken Holmen, CEO of CentraCare; Jake Anderson, Mayor of St. Cloud; Rick Bauerly from Granite Partners; and Brad Bacon, CEO of PleasureLand RV Center, Inc. Their honesty, experience, and generosity with our students made all the difference.
Here’s to a semester well spent and to the students who showed up ready to lead.

History isn’t a single thread, it’s a tapestry woven from many stories. Dr. Robert Galler introduces Public Histories, where students explore multiple narratives, work across disciplines, and build their own interpretations using archival and interview-based evidence.

In our Honors Introduction to Community Leadership class, we had the privilege of hosting Gregory Tomso, President of St. Cloud State University.
Dr. Tomso came prepared in the truest sense, he first listened to where students were in their understanding of leadership before shaping the conversation to meet them there, creating a discussion that felt both personal and purposeful.
One of the most memorable themes was navigating the drama that stems from ego and narcissism in others, and in ourselves. Dr. Tomso challenged students to start with honest self-reflection before pointing outward, then posed a simple but powerful question: can you still have a good day even if someone hurts your feelings? Effective leadership means accepting that we can only control our own reactions, not those of others.
He also spoke to the leader’s role in uniting people with different perspectives around a shared goal, a task that demands genuine understanding and composure under pressure.
We are grateful to Dr. Tomso for the honest, grounded wisdom he brought to our students.

On March 13, students from HONS 295 Public Histories and HONS 395 The Long Civil Rights Movement had the opportunity to visit the Minnesota Judicial Center and State Capitol. Our visit included a personal meeting with Supreme Court Associate Justice Sarah Hennesy, where we discussed the legal profession and the importance of the Court’s work. We also had the privilege of hearing from her assistant and law clerk, who shared their inspiring career journeys. A tour of the Judicial Center and the State Capitol further deepened our understanding of Minnesota’s rich legal history. Grateful for the generosity and insight from Justice Hennesy and her team. This experience was truly invaluable for our students, particularly those pursuing careers in law.
