Why do you want to enter the clinical mental health field?
I grew up with autistic family members and a family history off alcoholism. I have also experienced a fair number of personal experiences with mental health. I’ve always loved to see how the world and the people in it all interact. Clinical mental health lets me explore that concept further and also be a benefit to the world.
Have you considered a population that you would like to work with after graduation?
My ideal client population would be adolescents with addictions and emotional disorders. Often this demographic is underserved because they often have behavioral issues. I’ve worked with behavioral issues before and really enjoyed the work. I want to help clients understand the comorbidity of symptoms so they can recognize the way they work together.
Have you considered a theoretical orientation/ modality that you would like to work from?
I’m still going through a lot of these. I definitely want to work from a diagnostic perspective, but not limiting to that. I’m familiar with many different models, but I’m still working on understanding my own methods. I like to find the validity and truth in each of them, but we’ll see once I’m a little farther along which model will end up working best for me.
What are you most excited for regarding the CMHC program?
I’m really excited about learning more and developing my own counseling style.
