At the start of the school year, parents naturally think about and worry about bullies.
Thirteen years ago, When I spent six months designing my kids self defense and physical fitness program, I did too because it seemed like most of the programs for kids revolved around some hyped up variation of "GAAAAAA, YOUR KIDS ARE GUNNA GET SHOVED IN A LOCKER AND YOU ARE A BAD PARENT IF YOU DON'T OPEN THAT CHECKBOOK, GAAAAAA!
During that time, I researched various anti bully programs and didn't like what I saw. It just seemed like a bunch of made up words and/or people who forgot what being a kid was like with slick marketing and expense after expense. Ultimately they felt like fear promoting money grabs.
I decided just to launch my program and in time, I noticed something that hasn't changed in 13 years. The handful of times that new kids' parents talked about bullying concerns, it just sort of... stopped.
No big cafeteria show down. No rival kids walking towards each other with dramatic music playing. Nothing.
I soon realized the simple truth. Street Edge Kids were gaining confidence, walking tall and naturally attracting friends, admiration and the good kind of attention. Bullies wanted no part of that. Sometimes, those bullies ended up becoming friends because ultimately, they were just scared kids acting out.
It has been so cool to watch. It has continued here in St. Clair.
I have never once had a parent come to me saying one of my students were being bullied. Not once.
We all work hard to make this happen. Parents and guardians agree to stay and watch class. They take home the curriculum and help kids practice. The kids learn character, respect, leadership, discipline.
They learn to go to "Listening Position #1" during life lessons talks. They learn to replace the fear based nonsense which is Stranger Danger with Golden Rules #1 and 2.
They learn body awareness and boundary setting with drills like The Peacock, Shadow Check, Touch The Sky and more.
They learn self defense techniques that make sense with realistic expectations.
They make new friends. They start to walk tall in no time.
And it's awesome.
Come be a part of it. Something very special is happening here in Franklin County.
The trial class is still only $10.
