Since 1864, Rising Sun Lodge No. 49 has been a proud part of the St. Charles, Minnesota community. For more than 160 years, our Lodge has been dedicated to making good men better through friendship, integrity, personal grow

th, and service to others. Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal organizations, built upon the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Our members come from all walks of life and are united by a common desire to improve themselves, support one another, and strengthen the communities in which we live and work. At Rising Sun Lodge No. 49, fellowship is at the heart of everything we do. Whether gathering for meetings, participating in community events, volunteering, supporting local charities, awarding scholarships, or partnering with organizations such as the Order of the Eastern Star, we strive to leave our communities better than we found them. Our charitable efforts have supported scholarships for local students, food shelves, emergency services, fire and public safety initiatives, community projects, and many other worthwhile causes throughout southeastern Minnesota. Much of this work is made possible through fundraising efforts such as our annual Bingo at the Winona County Fair. Interested in Becoming a Mason? Stated Meetings

Rising Sun Lodge No. 49 holds stated communications on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from August 22 through June 14 at 7:00pm, with the following exceptions:

No meeting on the 4th Thursday of November. No meeting on the 4th Thursday of December. In January, the meeting is held on the 2nd Saturday instead of the 2nd Thursday. Please contact us or check our page for current meeting times, special events, and any schedule changes. This page is published under the approval of the M.W. Grand Master of Minnesota. This page was originally setup by Evergreen Lodge #46, which merged with Rising Sun Lodge #49 on September 21, 2021.

Tonight the Brothers of Rising Sun Lodge No. 49 will gather for another evening of fellowship, education, and planning ways to continue serving our communities.

Since October 26, 1864, generations of men have walked through our doors with one goal in common:

📚 Back-to-School Spotlight: Bernie Bierman

When people think of great educators, they often think of classrooms. But some of life's greatest lessons are taught on the playing field.

🏈 Bernie Bierman was one of the most successful football coaches in college history, leading the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to five national championships and helping shape generations of young men through discipline, leadership, teamwork, and integrity.

Beyond his remarkable coaching career, Bierman was also a Freemason, believing in many of the same values that made him a respected mentor: character, personal growth, service to others, and lifelong learning.

Freemasonry has long encouraged education—not only through schools and scholarships, but by helping good men become better men. Leaders like Bernie Bierman demonstrated that true education is about building character as much as teaching skills.

As another school year begins, we celebrate educators who inspire others to reach their full potential—both in the classroom and beyond.

📚 Back to School Spotlight: Robert E. Denfeld – Educator, Leader, and Minnesota Mason

Long before a high school in Duluth bore his name, Brother Robert E. Denfeld was shaping the future of education across Minnesota.

Serving as Superintendent of Duluth Public Schools for more than 30 years, Denfeld transformed education by expanding the city's schools, introducing Minnesota's first free textbook system, opening Duluth's first night school, and helping establish the teacher training program that eventually became the University of Minnesota Duluth. His vision ensured that more students—and future teachers—had access to quality education.

His commitment to service extended beyond the classroom.

Brother Denfeld was an active Freemason in Duluth's Ionic Lodge No. 186 and served as Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota in 1914. Throughout his Masonic career, he exemplified the principles of leadership, education, and service to others, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire Minnesota Masons today.

His life reminds us that true leadership isn't measured by titles—it is measured by the opportunities we create for others.

As Brother Denfeld reportedly said near the end of his life:

"I only wish I could do more."

🎓 Back to School & Masonic History

As students head back to the classroom, it's a great time to remember the people who believed education could change lives.

One of those men was Leland Stanford—businessman, former Governor of California, U.S. Senator, and a Master Mason.

After the death of his only son, Leland and his wife, Jane, established Stanford University in 1885 with a remarkable vision:

"The children of California shall be our children."

Their goal was to create a university where talented young people could receive an outstanding education and use their knowledge to improve the world.

Today, Stanford University is recognized as one of the world's leading institutions for education, research, innovation, and public service.

Freemasonry has long encouraged its members to pursue knowledge, cultivate wisdom, and serve humanity. While Stanford University was the result of Leland and Jane Stanford's shared vision, Leland Stanford's commitment to education, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning reflected many of the values that Freemasons strive to uphold.

At Rising Sun Lodge No. 49, we continue to support education through local scholarships and by encouraging every generation to keep learning.

🏀 Back to School Spotlight: Dr. James Naismith

As students head back to the classroom, we're recognizing educators who changed the world—and who also shared the values of Freemasonry.

Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian educator, physical education instructor, and physician, is best known for inventing the game of basketball in 1891. What began as an indoor activity to keep students active during the winter has grown into one of the world's most popular sports.

Beyond athletics, Dr. Naismith devoted his life to teaching, mentoring, and helping young people develop both physically and morally. His commitment to education reflected many of the same principles valued in Freemasonry: integrity, personal growth, service to others, and building better communities.

Dr. Naismith was also a proud Freemason, reminding us that the lessons learned in the classroom—and in the Lodge—can have a lasting impact on generations to come.

📖 A Tradition Worth Preserving

Since 1864, Rising Sun Lodge No. 49 has welcomed generations of men who wanted to leave their communities better than they found them.

Many families have had fathers, sons, grandfathers, and grandsons become members.

Others are the first Mason in their family.

No matter how someone arrives here, they're welcomed as a Brother.

The values remain the same today:

Integrity.
Respect.
Charity.
Brotherhood.
