Bet you didnβt know Memorial Day has Black roots long before the government made it official.
In 1865, formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston honored more than 250 Union soldiers who died in a Confederate prison camp. They gave them proper burials, decorated their graves with flowers, and held a remembrance ceremony celebrating freedom, sacrifice, and dignity.
Their story deserves to be remembered.
