Sweet Peas and Pigtails

Hi and welcome! I currently work part-time as an SLP and homeschool 2nd & 5th grade. I have been working for 16 years as a speech pathologist.

I'm Jennifer and I've been an SLP for 19 years, working in many different settings including private practice, private schools, preschools, daycares, and home health. Time seriously flies by! I've worked with all ages but the little ones are my favorite! I currently work part-time and homeschool preschool and second grade.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this communication board on the playground at a local state park! 😍

A communication board is a board made up of various symbols, pictures, or photographs that help a person express their feelings, needs, wants, and ideas.

This board gives children an opportunity to communicate with each other when they are unable to do so verbally.

There was also a Braille panel included on this playground! 🙌🏻

I'm excited to see this ADA inclusive playground and hope to see more in the future! Everyone deserves a chance to communicate with their peers. ❤️

Couldn't pass up the chance to hop on this trend! 🩷

I had to make lots of changes and spent more time than I would care to admit, but it was fun! 🤪🎉

I always feel like the crazy bag lady as I'm traveling around to my daycares and preschools so the bag was a must. And I wanted to include a box with my girls because I am also juggling being a homeschool mom!

How adorable is this Valentine strawberry?! 🍓 ❤️ Perfect for our little friends in speech!

I love using simple crafts like this to target lots of goals and get my kids talking! With this activity, you can target:

🍓 Requesting (I want, more, please, help)

🍓 Spatial Concepts (on, off, over, under, top, bottom)

🍓 Following Directions

🍓 Body Parts

🍓 Basic Concepts (color, size)

Fifth year of homeschool is in the books! 🥳 Today was our last day of first grade and fourth grade and I am so proud of my girls and for all of the hard work they did this year. 👏🏻

We joined a homeschool co-op and participated in a science fair where my oldest won "best presentation." She definitely gets that from her daddy! There was also lots of learning at home, field trips, library visits, play dates, art projects, book reading, writing, and plenty of outside time. ☀️

I can't get over how much they have learned and I am so glad I get to learn along side of them and be their teacher. ❤️

Now these two can enjoy their summer and we will start back in August with second and fifth grade! How is that even possible?! 😭

Any other SLPs seeing kids this summer? 🙋🏻‍♀️ Here are some fun ways that I keep my kids engaged during my summer speech sessions:

🐚 I love using different manipulatives like seashells, octopus finger tentacles, sensory bins, playdoh, pom poms, and the magic wand.

🐚 I also make sure to have a variety of materials on hand! I have coloring sheets, smash mats, flashcards, and bingo games. We can target tons of goals with these!

These resources are included in my summer speech and language bundle and target prepositions, basic concepts, pronouns, negation, apraxia, and following directions.

I love using mini erasers in speech. Using them with flashcards makes therapy that much more fun! 🎉

Speaking of flashcards, my Easter themed basic concepts flashcards (and worksheets!) are half off today only (3/15/24)!

Target qualitative, quantitative, temporal, spatial, negation, and color concepts, Easter style! 🐰🐥 I'm already using them in my sessions. 🤗

Happy February! ❣️ I'm so excited to use my new Valentine themed multisyllabic word flashcards in speech!

And I love these fun ways to practice! You really can't go wrong with Play-Doh, pom poms, and the magic wand! 😉

These cards can also be thrown into a fun holiday themed sensory bin (I like to use pink Easter grass 💕) and can be used for practicing articulation and learning Valentine vocabulary!

Behind every small business there is a family. This is my little family. I started my journey in creating speech and language resources eight years ago, just after my oldest daughter turned one!

I remember sitting in our home office while she was napping one day in September 2015 and creating that first resource for Sweet Peas and Pigtails (my TpT store is actually named after her). I never would have imagined it would have turned into an actual business and I would go on to create 189 more resources, write blogs, and make so many connections and friendships.

Thank you to everyone who has supported my small business. Each and every sale means the world to my family and I. I also want to say thank you to my husband who helps out so much with the technical side of things. I couldn’t do it without him!
