At Grassroots Education, LLC, our team is made up of highly trained, experienced educators who use the Orton-Gillingham Approach with our students.

Orton-Gillingham encompasses far more than phonics.

Yes, phonics and decoding are important—but Orton-Gillingham goes far beyond teaching students how to sound out words. Comprehensive OG instruction addresses the many layers of written language, including phonological awareness, sound-symbol relationships, syllable patterns, spelling, morphology (prefixes, suffixes, and roots), vocabulary, syntax and grammar, reading fluency, and comprehension.

It’s about helping students understand how language works while using evidence about reading and language development to guide instruction.

Quality training matters.

Our owner and director, Brittany Steen, Ed.S., is currently training at the Clinical Level (see the graphic for more about what that entails).

We’re committed to continuing to learn, following the evidence, and using that knowledge to provide thoughtful, individualized instruction for our students.

Clinical Level (formerly Certified), C/OGA is intended for practitioners who have completed the Associate level training and practicum. The Clinical Level expands and deepens the Associate Level concepts and equips the practitioner with the skills to address the needs of struggling readers of all ages, including those with dyslexia and more complex learning profiles, in any setting.

Homeschool families, we have room for you. 🌿

💚 Our Grassroots team has grown to 8 learning specialists, giving us more daytime flexibility and more opportunities to thoughtfully match each learner with the right specialist.

💚 We specialize in individualized academic intervention for students who need targeted support in reading, dyslexia, writing, spelling, math, and other areas of learning.

💚 Our specialists are certified educators, each with at least 15 years of classroom teaching experience, and every member of our team has completed Orton-Gillingham training. Several are continuing into more advanced OG training, including the Associate Level.

💚 Across our team, specialists also bring training in approaches such as Lindamood-Bell, Wilson, Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), Handwriting Without Tears, and more.

💚 And the learning doesn’t stop after training. Our specialists participate in ongoing refresher courses and regular collaboration with one another to continually strengthen their practice, problem-solve for individual learners, and improve instruction.

💚 Grassroots is led by an educator with 23 years of experience teaching students with reading and language-based disabilities, Associate Level certification through the Orton-Gillingham Academy, and ongoing training toward Clinical Level certification.

💚 We share this because who works with your child matters. We want families to know that their learner is being supported by experienced educators who continue learning, collaborating, and refining their instruction.

💚 With 8 specialists and expanded daytime availability, we have more flexibility to find the right specialist, approach, and schedule for your child.

💚 After-school availability is limited, but we currently have several daytime options available.

To the mothers and grandmothers reading this, I say this with genuine respect and admiration for you: being told your child has a "nervous system disorder" feels true because it names something real you watch happen at home every day. It often comes from people who make you feel seen. That is exactly why it spreads.

Here is what holds you back. Feeling understood is not the same as being told the truth. "Nervous system disorder" has no diagnostic criteria or evidence to back it, which means it can never tell you what to do next.
