We were thrilled to welcome a full house to the Panel Discussion and Gallery Tour of the exhibit "Florida At War: St. Augustine During the Revolutionary War." We all learned something new and enjoyed hearing the stories from the exhibit curators whose efforts were clearly a labor of love. Their enthusiasm and curiosity are infectious!

This week the USA celebrates its 250th birthday, the Semiquincentennial, on July 4, 2026, marking the historic signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Did you know that the people of St. Augustine did not join the Thirteen Colonies in rebelling against British rule in the Revolutionary War? Instead, they were British Loyalists, and East Florida became home to thousands of war refugees. Want to know more about their lives during the Revolution? Visit our new exhibit "Florida At War" in Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum, 48 King Street, St. Augustine, FL.

Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum is located at 48 King Street, St. Augustine, FL.

Coming downtown for the Independence Day festivities? Step out of the hustle & bustle into Ribera Park on St. George Street directly across from Fort Alley. The Park is the side yard of the Ribera House (Market to Market retail shop). When the original home stood on the site in the early 1700s, the yard would have had fruit trees and a vegetable garden to feed the family. In 1966 a formal garden of boxwoods, roses, and a grape arbor was installed in collaboration between the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, City of St. Augustine, and the St. Augustine Restoration Commission. In 1988-1992, an abandoned well in the garden was excavated revealing to archaeologists the seeds of corn, peanut, tomato, parsley, chili pepper, and squash--ancient evidence of colonial meals. The 1960s garden faded away, and in 2020, UFHSA installed a new garden based on design concepts developed by University of Florida Environmental Horticulture students. A large interpretive sign display was added to tell the story of the site including the people who lived in and around the Ribera home.

Visit Florida created a video series for the America 250 celebrations hosted by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recognizing local history. We are proud to note that the UFHSA Chairman of the Board, Tracy Upchurch, masterfully narrates the St. Augustine episode!

Vickers Collection at Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum, 48 King St. Wild Waters is organized by the UF Harn Museum of Art in partnership with the UF Center for Landscape Conservation Planning.
