The right friend doesn’t just cheer you on; they help you become better. True friendship isn’t about always agreeing, avoiding difficult conversations, or telling someone only what they want to hear. Sometimes, loving someone means encouraging them to grow, challenging them when they need it, and reminding them of who God created them to be.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17

Our newest Warrior Wisdom blog, “Be the Friend Who Sharpens,” explores what it means to build friendships that strengthen our character, deepen our faith, and bring out the best in one another.

Be the friend who celebrates victories, speaks truth with love, encourages growth, and points others toward Christ. Because sometimes, the greatest gift we can give a friend isn’t comfort; it’s the courage to become better.

When we intentionally help one another grow, something beautiful happens. Sharpening one another doesn't just benefit the person receiving encouragement, guidance, or correction; it strengthens everyone involved. When we choose to build each other up, our homes, classrooms, friendships, and communities become stronger. God created us to live in relationship with one another, and when we encourage each other to grow in wisdom, character, and faith, we become better equipped to live out His purpose for our lives.

The reward of sharpening one another is much greater than simply becoming better at something. We become stronger people, healthier families, better friends, and a community that reflects the heart of Christ. God can use each of us to make a difference in someone else's life through our words, our actions, our example, and our prayers.

Warrior Challenge: This week, look for one person you can intentionally help grow. Encourage them when they are struggling, celebrate their progress, pray for them, or lovingly challenge them to make a wise choice. Then remember: when you help someone else become stronger, you are becoming stronger too.

Sharpening one another doesn't happen only at school, church, or with friends. It begins at home. Our family is one of the first places where we learn how to love, communicate, forgive, serve, make good choices, and grow in our relationship with God. At home, we have daily opportunities to help one another become better, not by judging or criticizing, but by encouraging, correcting with love, and setting a good example. When families intentionally sharpen one another, home becomes a place where everyone can grow stronger together.

Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that we don't have to grow alone. God has given us our families to love us, teach us, encourage us, and sometimes lovingly challenge us. Our homes should be places where we can make mistakes, learn, receive grace, and keep becoming better versions of ourselves through God's guidance. This week, make it your family's goal to intentionally sharpen one another. Say something encouraging, help without being asked, forgive quickly, pray together, and lovingly challenge one another to make choices that honor God. Remember, Warriors: sometimes the greatest way to show your family you love them isn't simply to make them comfortable, but to help them grow stronger in Christ.
