As temperatures rise during the summer months, heat-related illness becomes a serious workplace hazard. The heat index is an important tool for understanding how hot it actually feels when temperature and humidity are combined. High humidity makes it more difficult for the body to cool itself through sweating, which can cause the body temperature to rise more quickly. When spending extended periods outdoors or in hot environments you should pay attention to heat index conditions and take appropriate precautions.

The presence of relative humidity in an already high temperature environment can create a dangerous combination. It is important to realize the effect that the heat index can have on your ability to work safely. Below is a handy heat index chart provided by the National Weather Service to determine what the temperature actually is when working in hot and humid environments and the risk associated with it.

Best Practices to Avoid Heat-Related Illnesses

Staying properly hydrated is one of the most important ways to prevent heat-related illness. Drink water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. During extended periods of heavy sweating, electrolyte replacement may also be appropriate. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as these can contribute to dehydration. It is also important to take rest breaks in shaded, air-conditioned, or otherwise cool areas when possible.

Stopping Work
When there are hazards present or another issue that interferes with being able to perform a work task safely, then it is important to feel comfortable to stop the work until it is safe to continue. In light of this, there can be people who do not feel comfortable doing this for many reasons.
Typical Reasons Why Individuals Are Afraid to Stop Work
• Afraid of punishment from supervisors
• Want to avoid conflict with others
• Do not want to be seen as scared or a “snitch”
• Do not want to slow work down
It is easier said than done to stop work in the name of safety, but it needs to be communicated that it is encouraged and okay to do so. Even if the highest levels of our leadership team stress the importance of being able to stop work, a single individual can make it hard for the employees on the worksite actually to do so comfortably.
Reasons to Stop Work
• To protect yourself and your fellow coworkers
• To protect property or equipment from damage or loss
Situations Where Stopping Work is Necessary
• When there is an unaddressed hazard.
• When the correct personnel are not a part of the task. For example- a company policy for a customer states that a third technician is needed to perform a hub entry. The third technician on your crew needs to move to another tower, so you must communicate the need for a third technician and stop work until a third technician arrives.
• When you do not have the right tool or equipment for the job. Using tools not designed for the task can lead to an incident.
• When you do not understand the work task or procedures. Stop and get clarification for the task.
• When you do not have the correct knowledge or training to do a task safely.

Summary
These are just a few of the situations where stopping work is necessary. Individuals need to feel comfortable stopping work to address whatever the problem is to be able to complete the work safely and efficiently. Many times the fixes that will make a job safer are quick and easy. You have the power to make a difference and stop work when it is needed.

Fireworks Safety Talk

We all look forward to holiday weekends to spend time with family and friends and get some much needed rest. The 4th of July weekend is no exception. The holiday is often celebrated with barbecues, swimming, boating, alcohol, and the main attraction - fireworks. While many of us look forward to this holiday weekend, it is a weekend that results in many hospitalizations - including many firework-related injuries.

Fourth of July Firework Injuries

Fireworks are a staple of 4th of July festivities for most Americans. They are inherently dangerous on their own, but when mixed with alcohol or when handled by children, the dangers greatly increase. Injuries to the hands and fingers are the most common type of injury sustained due to fireworks. The CPSC reported an estimated 14,700 injuries and 11 deaths in 2024, a 52% increase in injuries and a 38% rise in fatalities compared to the previous year.
While the hands and fingers are the most often injured body parts resulting from fireworks, injury can occur to any part of the body. While injuries from fireworks are often just burns that will heal with time, some individuals experience completely losing their hands or fingers. It is important to consider how losing even just one finger will affect your life at home as well as your ability to work. If you choose to use fireworks, it is important to handle them safely.

Firework Safety Tips

• Set off fireworks outdoors in clear areas free of houses, dry leaves, or other flammable materials
• Do not try to reignite or handle malfunctioning fireworks
• Be sure other people are out of range (or the line of fire) when lighting fireworks
• Never light fireworks in a container, especially glass or metal containers
• Keep unused fireworks away from firing areas
• Store fireworks properly and check instructions for special storage instructions
• Purchase fireworks from reputable sources and do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
