1) Senior Community Service and Development Program (SCSEP) for workers age 55+, unemployed and low income.

2) Vermont Returnship Program for workers of any age with a work history/experience looking to get back into the job market, or to change career paths.

Meet Debbie Jacques, one of our SCSEP participants in Maine.

Debbie is currently completing her community service assignment with Good Shepherd Food Bank, where she works in customer service and administrative support. She greets visitors, assists with data entry, and helps with the day-to-day administrative work that keeps things moving.

But perhaps Debbie says it best:

“I love it here, I’m learning so much, and they are so kind to me.”

That is what SCSEP is all about—giving older workers the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and contribute to organizations doing important work in their communities.

We are delighted to see Debbie enjoying her assignment and making the most of the opportunity.

Some partnerships stand the test of time because both organizations share a commitment to strengthening their communities.

A4TD is proud of our long-standing partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank, an organization dedicated to improving food security and addressing hunger throughout the state.

Good Shepherd Food Bank is also a valued SCSEP host agency. Through opportunities like these, SCSEP participants can build and strengthen workplace skills while contributing their time and experience to an organization whose work makes a difference in communities across Maine.

The sign displayed at the Food Bank says it well: ending hunger requires strong community partnerships. We are pleased that A4TD and SCSEP can be part of that work.

Re-entry is about more than returning to a community. It is also about rebuilding stability, reconnecting with others, and finding opportunities to move forward.

A4TD recently met with the Maine Prisoner Re-Entry Network (MERN) to explore how we might work together and how SCSEP could become part of the re-entry process for eligible Mainers age 55 and older.

For someone rebuilding their life, returning to work can be an important part of regaining independence and confidence. Through SCSEP, participants can gain current work experience, develop their skills through community service assignments, and work toward returning to unsubsidized employment.

Our discussions with MERN reflect something we strongly believe: people are better served when community organizations work together and connect them with the resources and opportunities they need.

We look forward to continuing the conversation on how our work with SCSEP may complement MERN’s efforts across Maine.

Partnerships make a difference in the communities we serve.

A4TD is proud to recognize our partnership with SeniorsPlus in Lewiston, an organization that has spent decades helping older adults remain connected, informed, and independent.

Our organizations share an important commitment: helping older Mainers continue to lead active, fulfilling lives. While SeniorsPlus connects people with valuable community resources and support, A4TD's operation of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) helps eligible older adults develop skills, rebuild confidence, and work toward returning to the workforce.

Our relationship with SeniorsPlus is especially meaningful because they also host A4TD's Lewiston office, giving us a presence within a community organization already trusted by the people we seek to serve.

We are grateful for partners like SeniorsPlus. By working alongside organizations that understand the needs of older Mainers, we can help connect more people with the resources, training, and opportunities they need.

Strong community partnerships help us better serve older Mainers.

A4TD is proud to work with the Eastern Area Agency on Aging and the Durgin Center as part of Maine’s aging network. The organization is also a current SCSEP host agency, providing an opportunity for one of our participants to gain valuable skills and experience while contributing to the community.

Our relationship continues to grow as we explore new ways to work together, connect older Mainers with resources and opportunities, and strengthen the network of organizations supporting people as they age.

We appreciate the Eastern Area Agency on Aging for their partnership and their continued commitment to older Mainers.

Sometimes the impact of SCSEP begins before someone even enters the program.

A recent applicant in New York’s Capital District took the time to contact A4TD specifically to recognize Career Navigator Michael Logan and the difference Michael had already made during the application process.

“From my first meeting with Mr. Logan, I felt my confidence returning.”

The applicant went on to describe the respect, empathy, understanding, and guidance Michael provided and asked that his efforts be recognized.

For someone who is considering a return to the workforce, rebuilding confidence can be just as important as developing new skills or finding the right opportunity. That process often begins with having someone who listens, understands, and helps identify a path forward.

Thank you, Michael, for representing A4TD and SCSEP so well and for making that difference from the very first conversation.

Technology skills grow through practice—and sometimes a little creativity.

A4TD Case Management Participant Assistant (CMPA) Bruce Keezer recognized that several participants would benefit from additional technology training and developed the idea for a Technology Boot Camp. With support from Paul Cote at the Augusta CareerCenter, the idea became a four-week training opportunity for participants in the Augusta area.

Participants worked through practical computer activities in a supportive, hands-on setting. As part of the final project, they created a lighthearted “Cat BBQ” or “Mr. Whiskers’ Birthday” flyer, applying their developing skills in formatting, design, and creativity.

We thank Bruce for recognizing the need and taking the initiative to help make the class possible. We are also grateful to Paul and the Augusta CareerCenter for their partnership and support, and we congratulate the participants on their progress.

Partner Spotlight: Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut

At A4TD, we are proud to recognize the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut (AOASCC) as one of our valued partners in serving older adults across the region.

For more than 50 years, AOASCC has worked to help older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers remain independent, informed, and engaged in their communities through advocacy, information, and a wide range of supportive services. As Connecticut's first Area Agency on Aging, their commitment to healthy, independent aging has made a lasting difference throughout south central Connecticut.

We are especially grateful for AOASCC's partnership as a SCSEP Host Agency. They help older job seekers gain meaningful experience, strengthen their skills, and prepare for future employment while making a positive impact in their community.

Strong partnerships like this are essential to helping older adults achieve greater independence and continue contributing their talents and experience.

We had a productive meeting this week with the team at United Way Northwest Connecticut in Torrington, and we're excited about the opportunities ahead.

Our discussion focused on how we can work together to connect more older adults with meaningful training opportunities through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).

We're looking forward to collaborating in several ways, including:

• Sharing information about SCSEP through Northwest United Way's communications.
• Connecting with local nonprofit organizations interested in becoming SCSEP host agencies.
• Introducing A4TD and SCSEP to community partners throughout Northwest Connecticut.
• Participating in an upcoming community television program to discuss how SCSEP benefits older adults and nonprofit organizations.

Partnerships like this help ensure that more people know about the resources available in their community while strengthening the nonprofit organizations that serve them every day.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting with the team at Brooker Memorial in Torrington to learn more about the incredible work they do for children and families throughout Northwest Connecticut.

For more than a century, Brooker Memorial has provided programs that strengthen the community through early childhood education, pediatric dental care, family support services, and career exploration opportunities for young people. Their commitment to improving lives makes them an outstanding example of the type of organization that helps communities thrive.

We also had the opportunity to discuss the possibility of Brooker Memorial becoming a host agency for the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). Host agencies play a vital role by providing meaningful Community Service Assignments where older adults can build new skills, gain recent work experience, and prepare for unsubsidized employment while supporting important community services.

We appreciate the warm welcome and look forward to exploring how our organizations might work together to create opportunities that benefit both older workers and the communities they serve.
