March 1, 2017 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking students for its Youth Development and Mentoring Program (YDMP) for the 2017 construction season. The mission of the program, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is to provide students with various mentoring opportunities as they pursue a possible career in transportation.
"The program values responsibility, empowerment, respect, and relationship-building skills," said Paul Ajegba, MDOT University Region engineer. "MDOT offers mentoring and enrichment sessions to help teach important skills and present students with information about careers in civil engineering, road construction and maintenance, planning, and other areas of transportation."
Mentoring sessions are conducted by YDMP participants and include activities tailored to introduce students to various engineering fields, including surveying, material testing and analysis, and civil engineering. Students also have the opportunity to attend various training activities, including college readiness planning, resume writing and interviewing skill-building, and personal finance and accounting.
Eligible team members must be either a high school student or recent high school graduate at least 16 years old, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal. For some positions, a valid driver’s license is required.
Students can learn more about the YDMP program and how to apply at www.michigan.gov/mdot-ydmp. Multiple team member and team leader positions are available in the following locations: Lansing, Ypsilanti, Adrian, and Jackson.
