Mr. Bailey visited Mr. Rousseau’s third graders this morning to share his thoughts on an exciting new chess book! Hemmeter students are voracious readers, and many of them also love chess, so this book satisfies both! Mr. Bailey’s book talk gave a sneak peek into the story and the captivating question… Will humans prevail, or will computers become the unstoppable champions of chess?

Phonics in action in Mrs. Little’s class!

Our first graders were hard at work reviewing the FLOSS Rule this morning! When a one-syllable word has a short vowel and ends in f, l, s, or z, we usually double that final letter. Think fluff, hill, mess, and buzz!

Students used sand trays to practice spelling patterns and then worked on blending sounds together to read words. Hands-on practice + strong phonics skills = growing readers! ❤️💙

🕯️ Jack be nimble, Jack be quick… 🕯️

Kindergarten is bringing their CKLA learning to life! As part of their study of Nursery Rhymes and Fables, our Hornets learned “Jack Be Nimble” and then took their turn jumping over the candlestick!

And here’s a fun fact: candlestick jumping was once an actual game and competition! The goal was to jump over a lit candle without knocking it over or putting out the flame. Don’t worry, our Hornets went with a much safer version! 😂

Learning, history, and a little jumping all rolled into one great CKLA lesson!

The first of many fantastic fifth grade traditions started last week! ❤️💙

Our fifth graders met their kindergarten buddies from Mrs. Moeller’s room this morning, and they are already loving their time together!

So many smiles, giggles, and sweet moments as they got to know one another. We can already tell this is going to be a special year for these buddies! 🐝

“Do you know what anthropomorphism is?”

Not exactly the question you’d expect your first grader to ask you at home! 😂

Last year, STCS adopted Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) as our primary resource for reading and writing. One of the things we love about CKLA is the rich knowledge and vocabulary students are exposed to from the earliest grades. Students don’t just learn to read. They build background knowledge, encounter sophisticated vocabulary, and learn how to talk about big ideas.

Last night, one of our first-grade parents sent us this adorable video of their child putting that learning into action. He asked his mom if she knew what “anthropomorphism” meant. When she said she didn’t, he explained it perfectly!

Big word. Little Hornet. 🐝

🤖 LEGO Robotics is BACK!

Our 5th grade Hornets kicked off their first LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime robotics unit, and they were all in from the start!

Students worked together to build, code, test, troubleshoot, and improve their creations. There was plenty of problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and, of course, a whole lot of LEGO fun along the way.

This is what hands-on STEM learning looks like at The Hive! 🐝❤️💙

We can’t wait to see what they build next!
