Pareidolia is the phenomenon of seeing meaningful patterns in random stimuli - apophenia is where you see faces in objects such as the fronts of cars, Jesus in toast, etcetera. The classical column base (study, bank of Montreal) reputedly relates to a female foot bound with rope, such as a caryatid’s, hence the rope-like motifs. This base has a center “cavetto” (diagram, second image) which also refers to rope. The Pantheon portico column bases are similar to this. But I see human lips, don’t you? Michelangelo’s screaming man (third image, study for pilaster bases at the Laurentian library) also indicates a [sectional] apophenia…hilarious!

Fall semester concluded for Architecture 301 with a fabulous review last week, jury including Lorraine Barcant, Ronald de Villa, David Wallance, Lori Beppu, Maria Cumella, and Dongsei Kim. Some fabulous work from students with their first multistory building with zoning, code constraints, as well as structural systems and passive solar control.
