Women sailors at Breakwater Sailing Center in Sag Harbor hosted a three-day clinic on May 29-31 designed to ease sailors with basic boat handling skills into the world of sailboat racing. The clinic was led by Kristen Berry, a charismatic fulltime North U sailing educator and coach based in Annapolis, MD assisted by volunteers from Breakwater, in the popular J70 sailboat. The course was both classroom instruction and on the water training culminating in a “fun-regatta” to apply newly learned skills.

During the on-the -water portion of the clinic, four person teams worked together rotating positions throughout the day. The students practiced drills and applied the concepts they had learned in the classroom, while the professional coach moved among the fleet providing individual feedback.

Despite being blown out by gale force winds on Saturday (the clinic was moved indoors for safety), the participants enjoyed two full days on the water in beautiful conditions. As one sailor said, “I learned so much from an amazing teacher and had fun!”

Breakwater runs J70 races on Thursday evenings and is offering a new course this summer tailored to women who are “racing curious.” There is also a women’s course for beginner/intermediate sailors, as well as the option to take private lessons. Contact Breakwater Sailing Center for more information.

On Sunday, May 17th, Breakwater Yacht Club & Sailing Center hosted a stellar JY-15 regatta. Club photographer Michael Mella enlisted acclaimed drone photographer Marianne Barnett to capture the event from Havens Beach, and the results are extraordinary. View the regatta through Marianne’s creative eye as her drone sweeps above the fleet. Scroll through her photos for stunning perspectives that only a passing seagull might view.

JY-15 Long Island Championships Regatta

Sag Harbor’s Breakwater Yacht Club & Sailing Center hosted the opening round of the 2026 JY-15 Long Island Championships this past Sunday.

Originally scheduled for May 3 but postponed due to a small craft advisory that called for gusts above 20 knots, Sunday’s 12-boat fleet was burdened by endless wind shifts and dramatic increases in velocity, with first gun shy of 8 knots and final race at 14 knots, gusting to 18. As strengthening conditions raised whitecaps across the bay, the fleet endured multiple capsize & equipment failures that ultimately thinned the fleet.

Race committee duties rested on the strong shoulders of Breakwater’s Marty Knab, while the club’s commodore Nick Gazzolo & Dylan DiSunno kept score. With three bullets in the six race series, long time Breakwater winning skipper Derrick Galen, with Amelia Steelman upfront “manning” headsail trim, took home top honors.

We have some exciting news - the Women’s Sailing Initiative’s (WSI) is launching a brand new Introduction to Racing course, and we’d love for you to join us!

Whether you’ve never crossed a start line or you’re dusting off your racing knowledge after time away, this is the perfect opportunity to learn, laugh, and make new friends along the way. There’s nothing quite like sharing a cockpit with a new crew!

This course will offered on Tuesday evenings 5:30 - 7:30 PM in July and August as part of the WSI program.

The four session (evening) course will cover what you need to know to get started in sailboat racing. We’ll cover everything from the racing rules and understanding the course, to nailing your start, racing fundamentals, and basic tactics - all in a supportive, encouraging environment where every question is a good question. This is the perfect course for those looking to gain a basic knowledge of racing or for those returning to the sport looking for a refresher. The course will be held in the classroom and on the water utilizing Breakwaters fleet of J70s and J24s.

WSI is all about creating a safe, enjoyable space where women lift each other up and grow together on the water. No experience is too little, and no goal is too big.

Come for the sailing. Stay for the friendships.

We can’t wait to see you out there!
