Join us for the Antigua Barbuda Hamptons Challenge—a great day of racing, fun on the water, and a terrific party afterward.

Breakwater is proud to support this year’s Challenge and the work of i-tri, which uses sport and community to build confidence, strength, and resilience in local girls. It’s a wonderful cause and one we’re glad to get behind.

There’s also a serious incentive to this race: the winning crew earns a trip to Antigua, including a boat to race during Antigua Sailing Week—hard to beat as sailing prizes go.

We’d love a strong Breakwater turnout on the racecourse, but you don’t need to race to join in. Come for the party, cheer on the sailors, and help support i-tri. It’s always a great gathering of the local sailing community.

Breakwater will also help welcome the fleet by opening up some of our dock space to visiting competitors.

Whether you’re racing for Antigua, supporting a boat, or just coming for the party, we hope to see lots of Breakwater faces there.

Women Take the Helm at Breakwater’s WOOD Regatta

Light winds can baffle the best sailors when it comes to hitting the start line when the audible countdown timer signals the race committee to sound the start gun. This photo proves a point — only four of the 14 boats crossed the line exactly on time.

Breakwater Sailing Center & Yacht Club’s annual WOOD Regatta — for “Women’s Open One Design” — set sail off Havens Beach in Sag Harbor on Sunday.

Ask any sailor, “What wind conditions do you find most challenging?” and the response would invariably be: “light air.”

Two-to-5-knot variable zephyrs greeted 14 “one design” JY-15 sloops for an afternoon of ballet-like slow-motion racing. A regatta of this type most always consists of six races; due to the snail’s pace on Sunday, the race committee was only able to fit in three in the official allotted time.

Sara Nightingale, a gifted sailor and owner of a prestigious Main Street Sag Harbor fine art gallery, said of the event, her brainchild, “The WOOD Regatta welcomes women of all ages and experience levels in a supportive environment. The word “OPEN” in the acronym is key — it means all are welcome.”

The founder of Breakwater’s Women’s Sailing Initiative, four-time solo skipper in The World’s Longest Sunfish Race around Shelter Island, Joan Butler said, “The WOOD is an annual event encouraging women to take the helm and collectively support each other.”

To no one’s surprise, with two firsts in the three-race WOOD, a transplant from London when her family moved to Sag Harbor during the pandemic, club wunderkind Venetia Satow, took home the gold.

Sailors of her caliber almost always first raised a sail at a very young age, but Venetia started just four years ago, at 15 years old. Having recently graduated from high school, she took a year off before going to college to train at the SailCoach Academy in Malta.

Via i-tri Last year, Captain Lee and his crew claimed first place in the Antigua and Barbuda Hamptons Challenge, earning the opportunity to represent the Hamptons at Antigua Sailing Week.

Today, we are sharing more of that journey.

Think you know your rosé? Put your palate to the test.

Join us Tuesday, August 11 at 6:30 PM for a Blind Rosé Tasting hosted by Wölffer Estate (Wölffer Estate Vineyard) on the waterfront at Breakwater Yacht Club.

2026 WOOD Regatta, Women’s Open One-Design Race, Sunday, July 26th • You are invited to join us for the WOOD Regatta this Sunday - whether as a spectator on your power boat, a female skipper, a crew of any gender, or a volunteer. WOOD is an acronym for Women’s Open One-Design, but everyone is welcome to join the fun. Any female may take the helm of a JY15 (we have loaner boats), and any person may be a crew.

The current forecast is for gentle winds, so this could be your moment to give it a try. We can pair singles with appropriate crew/ skipper. The fun begins at 1:00 p.m. and culminates with food and awards back at Breakwater at around 5:00 p.m. We hope to see you there.

Stormy Seas Test Sag Harbor Cup Fleet
Lightning, driving rain and near-gale-force winds forced most boats from the annual Breakwater Sailing Center & Yacht Club regatta, which raises scholarship funds to make sailing more accessible

The 44th annual Sag Harbor Cup, a scholarship fundraiser hosted by the Breakwater Sailing Center & Yacht Club, was one for the record books. Forecast: Rain starting one hour into the race; wind in the 10-to-15-knot range. Reality: Yes, rain — but add in multiple lightning strikes and near-gale-force winds gusting into the mid-30-knot range, or around 40 mph.

The JY15 WOOD Regatta on Sunday, July 26th is fast approaching. Arrive at 1:00, Skipper’s meeting at 2:00. We encourage all genders to participate, though women must helm. If you are a male looking for a female skipper, we can help you find one. If you already know who your partner is, please let us know. And if you need to borrow a boat, let us know that as well. We have a lot of club boats available and Bud may have extras at Havens. Friends, spouses, dogs and volunteers are welcome to join us for the feast at Breakwater after racing.

JULY SESSIONS START MONDAY!

We are offering multiple options for women’s sailing. All classes are held 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays in June, July, August, and 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesdays in September. Each class is comprised of four evenings. New classes begin every month. Please be sure to check the dates for each session when registering.
