Cicadas spend years underground quietly growing, strengthening, and preparing, before emerging all at once to take flight. What appears to be sudden change is actually the result of patient, unseen development.

Learning works the same way - growth is rarely linear, much of it happens out of sight - and it cannot be rushed. Like a cicada- it can also look a little scary. That’s when the parental anxiety pops up and we trust the “experts” right?

When we allow young learners the time, space, and safety to struggle, reflect, and mature - without coercion or constant pressure to perform, we honor the process that real growth requires. Like the cicada, emergence happens when they are ready, not when it is demanded of them by a school system or teachers - or worse, their parent.

Development requires patience.
Growth requires freedom.
Becoming requires time.

In learner-driven environments, we trust the process because what eventually emerges is stronger, more confident, and more fully formed.

Let them grow - the amazing flight will come.

At Acton Acres Adventure Academy, learning isn’t in a classroom seat. Much of it happens outside, in motion, and under real conditions.

That is why mountain biking is required.

Our approach is grounded in Experiential Learning Theory, which holds that children learn best through direct experience. On the trail, learners make decisions, manage risk, encounter difficulty, and adapt. Feedback is immediate and real, and growth comes through action and reflection rather than instruction alone.

We are also guided by Self-Determination Theory, which emphasizes autonomy, competence, and connection. Mountain biking gives learners independence in how they ride, confidence as skills are earned, and strong peer bonds through shared challenge.

Leadership and teamwork emerge naturally as learners take turns leading, support one another, and move together across the miles of trails on campus. The trail becomes a living classroom where movement, responsibility, and community are formed side by side.

Is mountain biking fun? Yes. Is it learning? Deep learning.

One of my favorite Wild Kratts. Her love of nature and all things wild is pretty inspiring - even for me. Bug adventures during the day, frogs and toads at [every] night.

Self-directed learning provides space for inquiry, exploration, creativity, and for developing intellectual and moral courage. These learned traits are predictive of long term success and learning engagement.

Play is the work of the child.

Guiding a child’s learning is a gift - the child should feel that.

There are specific studies that show and indicate a relationship between nutrition, morning, exercise, and metacognition. Anecdotally, most of us know that. Dr. Maria Montessori taught, that only through the hands and movement, can you truly reach the mind.

This morning we kicked off the fall expedition here at Acton Acres Adventure Academy, with a 30 minute learner-led stretch and move session. Every morning before core skills learning, we start our day with 30 min of running, biking, stretching, or yoga.

Spending time outdoors, in an unrestricted, learner-driven environment with natural light and natural air, is a guiding principle of the Academy.

Adventure is out there!

Once you know, you know. Take a break from consuming social, and dig into a few reports / studies on the subject. Use Google Scholar (free) and search self-determination theory, experiential learning theory, Montessori, Waldorf, and nature-based learning. But don’t do it if you aren’t ready to have your perspective on schooling shift - you’ll need to make some changes in your life.

What is more important than raising your children? All is not well, all is not just fine.

Unrestricted outdoor play is learning, let’s remember that. Learning isn’t restricted to a concrete classroom with a “certificated” individual with theoretical experience. YOU are their best teacher. Don’t forgot that.
