Love is Instinct, but Perseverance is a Skill
I never planned for my child to learn piano.
Like many families, one day we passed a music studio, and she looked at the piano, held my hand, and said:
“Mom, I love piano. I want to learn.”
I wanted to respect her interest. For the first six months, she was full of passion.
But soon:
➡️ The excitement faded
➡️ Challenges appeared
➡️ Practice felt boring
Then she said:
“I don’t like piano anymore. I want violin.”
If I let her switch every time, she’ll keep chasing something new and never finish anything.
Love is instinct. So is getting bored easily.
Psychologist Angela Duckworth calls this GRIT — passion and perseverance for long-term goals.
Research shows talent isn’t the key to success.
Sticking with something through difficulty is.
Liking something gets you started.
Persistence turns it into ability.
Many successful people went through hours of repetition and boredom.
Success isn’t about talent alone. It’s about showing up, even when it’s hard.
The real regret isn’t “I can’t.”
It’s “I could have, but I gave up.”
A happy childhood doesn’t mean only doing what’s fun.
It means learning to overcome, grow, and feel proud of yourself.
Wise parents don’t force success.
We guide our kids to keep going.
When they want to quit, we help them through the hard part.
When they get distracted, we remind them to finish what they started.
When it’s tough, we stay with them.
What they learn isn’t just piano.
It’s courage, responsibility, and grit — skills that last a lifetime.
They may not become pianists.
But they will learn to start something, and see it through.
And that is the greatest lesson of all.

Don't Let "If They Don't Like It, Don't Push Them" Steal Your Child's Chance to Learn Perseverance
A friend visited and saw me insisting my daughter, who didn't want to practice, finish her piano lesson. He commented, "If she doesn't like it, why push her?" It sounds reasonable, but I see it differently.
Liking is an Instinct, but Perseverance is a Skill
Children often start something because they "like" it, but they are equally prone to "the new shiny" and wanting to quit. If we always let them switch to something new, they never truly build any skill.
Psychologist Angela Duckworth introduced the concept of "Grit." She found that the key to future success isn't talent, but the ability to keep investing effort during boredom and frustration. Liking gets you started; only perseverance turns that liking into ability.
The Real Regret Isn't "I Can't," But "I Could Have"
If a "happy childhood" means only doing what's easy and fun, a child will never experience the deeper joy of pushing past their own limits.
A parent's role isn't to push their child to be successful, but to teach them to persevere: to gently but firmly guide them through difficulties and to finish what they started. This teaches a life-long ability: Grit.
It's Not About the Piano, It's About Growth
My daughter may not become a pianist. But if she learns to face challenges, take responsibility for her choices, and see things through to the end—then this experience, piano or not, will have been more than worth it.
Why "Learning for Fun" Causes Kids to Quit Piano Early
"We’re just learning for fun… Should we wait to buy a piano until he shows interest?"
This is probably the most common opening line piano teachers hear. Parents often say: "It’s just the beginning. Don’t pressure the kid. Let’s wait until he’s interested to buy a piano and practice."
But dear parents, this is exactly why kids quit piano the fastest! 😱
Why? Because "interest" isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you build through practice.
Here are 5 truths about piano interest:
1️⃣ Interest doesn’t grow on its own without practice. Without a sense of achievement, where does interest come from? Playing messy and out of tune only makes kids think, "Piano is too hard, I have no talent," and they quit quickly.
2️⃣ Learning piano = lessons + practice. They’re two sides of the same coin. If you only take lessons without practicing, that’s not learning piano—it’s "paying the teacher to keep you company."
3️⃣ Build habits from Lesson One. Not setting habits at the start actually builds the bad habit of "no practice needed for piano." When you try to make him practice six months later, he’ll be confused: "Why do I have to now if I never did before?"
4️⃣ "Playing around" ≠ "practicing." A kid randomly touching keys is "exploration." Working precisely toward practice-book goals is "real practice."
5️⃣ Don’t turn teachers into "babysitters." No progress, always redoing old material in class—kids learn to slack off and take shortcuts. Eventually, frustration kills their curiosity completely.
🎹 Before buying a piano, you can:
If you’re unsure about buying,
1. Rent a piano for home
2. Practice at the studio
The key isn’t who owns the piano—it’s practicing every day.
💡 Teacher’s tip for parents:
Building habits doesn’t mean sitting with them while they practice, but it does mean supervising.
Add piano practice to their daily routine—even just 15 minutes a day. With progress, achievement turns into real, lasting interest.
🙏 Don’t wait until your kid says, "I don’t want to learn anymore," only to realize you never gave them a chance to get good.
