“Beyond building knowledge, they will build relationships.
By the time the competition starts, they know each other’s units, their favorite Federalist paper, and their social media handles. They’ve seen each other tear up at the National Archives and experience the awe of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Over three days of competition, they are each other’s biggest fans, because while still competitors, they begin to see democracy not just as something they study, but as something they practice—together.
They leave with more than knowledge. They leave with a deeper belief in our shared democratic ideals—and connections that will last far beyond this moment.
The We the People National Finals is a civic education experience unlike any other. This is truly where the principles and practice of democracy come to life for each and every student as they connect with students from across the country.”

The National Finals are just days away. Teams will start arriving on Thursday. Most teams started their journey last spring when they signed up for the class. This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and commitment that will shape much of what they will do in the future. If you know of a student who has chosen this path, whether they made it to the finals or not, you know the depth of commitment. Once you know you can’t not know! This kind of commitment and teamwork gives me hope!
Here is a glimpse of teams at state this year.
This is it! We are counting down to the We the People National Finals in Washington D.C. Young people throughout the country will converge to discuss constitutional issues and defend their positions based on evidence to panels of experts who have volunteered their time.
It is what gives me hope and I am excited to see our California State Champions Foothill High School coached by Graham McBride and Jeremy Detamore, as well as our California Wild Card Amador Valley coached by Stacey Sklar.
Completion Starts April 17! Can’t wait!
