The Los Rios Community College District has been following the developing news about César Chávez with shock and sadness.
While Los Rios and many other organizations have an annual holiday named after Chávez, it’s important to remember the true meaning of that day. It represents a broader movement for dignity, fairness, and respect for farmworkers and all working people, grounded in nonviolence, community, and the pursuit of justice. The day ultimately honors the enduring values and collective efforts that continue to advance equity and opportunity beyond any one person. We have removed the man’s name from all references to the holiday at our district while the state and local leaders process this distressing story and map a path forward.
We also recognize the extraordinary courage it takes for individuals to come forward with allegations of sexual abuse, particularly when they involve someone with significant power, influence, or stature. Victims of sexual assault deserve our deepest respect, compassion, and unwavering support. We unequivocally condemn all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation, and stand firmly against any actions that undermine the safety and dignity of others.
As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to equity, social justice, and the creation of communities rooted in dignity, accountability, and respect—where all individuals feel safe, heard, and supported, and where our actions reflect the values we seek to uphold.
