❤️💛💚 Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. June 19, 1865 was the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas received word of the Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom. While it is a day to celebrate, it should also be noted that this occurred more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is a day to celebrate, reflect, and acknowledge the work that must still be done to create equity for marginalized people, especially the Black community, in the United States. Check our LInkTree for local Black owned businesses you may want to patronize, and the Sacramento Juneteenth Festival that takes place tonight and tomorrow!

💚💛 Dr. Katie Savin (Assistant Professor, School of Social Work) published an article with Dr. Callie Freitag (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Dr. Matthew Borus (Binghampton University) on recent struggles faced when attempting to access Social Services in the United States. Published in Fortune, and covered by the New York Post, it is definitely worth a read! All three can be found in our LinkTree. Congratulations, Dr. Savin!

We all deserve the right to live authentically and safely as ourselves. Pride has always been about resistance, taking up space, and claiming the joy that has so often been denied to the most vulnerable among us. This month, and every month, we stand with our LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, staff, and community members. Happy Pride!
