In the first 6 months of 2020, California saw an increase of 5% in pedestrian deaths over the previous year even though the number of cars on the roads was much lower.
More vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bikers need drivers to slow down and stay alert.

Work zones can be very distracting with all of the interesting equipment and materials, not to mention flashing lights, shifting lanes, workers moving around.
It's so important to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, and your mind fully focused on driving to keep you and everyone else safe.
Do you have any work zone safety tips to add to our list? Share them in the comments or send us a DM.

California has a "Move Over Law" that requires drivers to move over a lane if safe to do so when passing a vehicle with flashing amber lights. This could include DOT vehicles, emergency vehicles, and tow trucks. If it's not safe to change lanes, slow down to a reasonable speed that is safe for road conditions and the stationary vehicle.
If the vehicle with flashing amber lights is on the other side of a protective physical barrier, you don't need to move over.
Remember, work zones are temporary. Crashing in a work zone might change your whole life.

If you're following the car in front of you too closely, you might not have enough time to react if they quickly reduce their speed or come to a stop. It can be hard for drivers to predict what will happen in a work zone, so it's important to give yourself that extra space so you can respond to any change in the work zone safely.
Remember, work zones are temporary. Crashing in a work zone might change your whole life.

We've been seeing a lot of traffic cones and work zones this month as highway workers make updates to our roads. Over the next week, we'll be sharing Driving Safety Tips that'll keep you and everyone else safer when you are driving in or near work zones.
Tip #1: Be patient and follow the posted speed limit.
Lowered speeds or extra stop signs in work zones aren't to inconvenience you. They are there to keep you and the work zone crew members safe. Speed is the number one contributor to work zone crashes.
Remember, work zones are temporary. Crashing in a work zone might change your whole life.
Stay tuned for more tips!

Keep it Simple. Sharing a message of safety doesn’t have to be fancy. This student leader educated her classmates with this poster about the 5 Dangers of Driving.
She lists driving at night, speeding or racing, distractions, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence as dangers faced by all drivers. Is there anything you would add to this list?
